I understand the basics I have to get a picture, resize it and then assign a key as the SPRAY key. However I dont no what software to resize it with and what sizes are allowed.
Needs to be no more than 256x256 pixels and i think it should be 64kb for your bog standard spray, i generaly make them in Fireworks ( or did ), resize them etc in ther aswell, then for transparency i use VTFEdit, to make them vtf files then copy them into the sprays directory, load them up ingame then it creates a vmt for it and it should work. IF you dont want trapnsparency you dont need to use VTFEdit and can just copy a TGA, psd, pgn or a jpeg into you sprays directory where it converts it to a vtf and makes a vmt
Someone uses a well-known but expensive graphics-programm with initials like, erm, lets say, PS, and puts the background to "transparent" or "no background" (this person doesnt know how its called, since he uses another language pack for this program), would he still need the converter to get transparency effect for his spray?

If you want transparency in PS, go to the channels tab, which is in the same little window as layers. Make a new channel (the same way you add a new layer).
Switch back to the layers tab. Now select which parts of the image you want to see with the magic wand or pen tool (whichever is easier for you. With the pen tool you will need to right click the image then choose make selection).
Go back to your newly created channel and now fill the selection with white. Anything that isnt white will be transparent and won't show up.
Basically thats it. You just save it in the manner you would any other spray. It is possible to change the fill opacity of the white to make things semi transparent, like a translucent bottle spray for example

I thought about putting in some pictures, but I'm too lazy.
And the bit about filling in a layer with grey isn't actually necessary. That is just so you can proof the alpha channel. It won't make much difference if you do it or not.
