Jesus, TF2 going free tripled its playerbase? Goddamn. Factor in things like people who bought it ages ago and no longer play it, and that factor grows even larger.

BattleField Heroes was a failure really. They tried to make it work with just vanity items, but in the end they had to resort to selling exclusive weapons etc. Tbh I'd prefer to play a flat fee. No such thing as a free lunch. Quake Live tried to do a similar thing, again, didn't work out quite as planned. TF2 is a little different. I think Valve realised they weren't going to make any more money from the sale of the game, people who still haven't purchased it at sale price were clearly never going to...better to give them the game for free and then hope they like it enough to buy things from the shop.
