Generally found that the pyro was actually quite destructive if I could position myself correctly. It's all about the team's core (heavy, medic and whoever is keeping with them) drawing attention from you. If you can get amongst any group of enemies that doesn't include their heavy, you can break up their formation, ideally killing one of them. A broken formation allows a counterattack as they all retreat for heals. Getting behind the enemy was greatly facilitated by position info from the team. My Axtinguisher lay mostly unused in favour of shotgun switching.
The other thing I fast learned is that anywhere that that sniper could see me was no-man's land. Speaking of snipers, it was as if Spandex was using heat seeking bullets at one point, every enemy I had weakened with fire was professionally picked off with a bodyshot (3 in a row at one point). No need to risk headshots if they're already badly hurt.
In that game I found spychecking reasonably unnecessary save for igniting the DR spy and letting him run. But then he was probably the team's weakest member (Obviously far too used to using the fez) and I doubt it counts. What I found more useful was keeping the sniper dead and the rockets turned away, even got a reflect kill or three.
One final note, one that applies to all. Your ears are a massive asset, listen for every detail. The whirr of the minigun, the thunk of a stickybomb, the....something... of the Dead ringer. Keeps you alive.
