sorry to sound like a broken record but the server lag is worse than ever these past few days.
and to be fair its been more than a year that this problem has been going.....
surely its time to forget about waiting for linux problem to be fixed and just to use windows or do it whatever way other servers are doing? i mentioned this over 6 months ago and got told to be quiet and to wait for a linux fix or whatever...... i have waited, and dozens of other regs have waited patiently.....
but for god's sake........
its been more than a year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please, its time for someone just do what it takes......
It was pretty bad tonight. Feels like an age since this problem first started.
Anyway Dazed, I'm sure its not a simple or cheap fix or it would have been done already and honestly its not as if we are owed anything. I do wonder how many regulars have stopped being regulars because of this problem though. I doubt I'm the only one.
If its simply too expensive to fix perhaps an appeal could be made to the community? A sort of kickstarter for a lag free HH? I'd be up for contributing a little bit if that was the case.

Re: server lag
The only person that is in a position to change the current distro of linux that we use is Frog. Changing the server to another flavour of linux is not as easy as doing a "windows reinstall" and then putting a few games back on, there are many services that run on the box and it takes maticulous planning to move the databases / website / game servers / configs over smoothly. Our dedicated box is unmanaged by our hosting company and is in a remote location in a data centre, so things have to be planned correctly.
Frog is a very busy person and I am sure when he has the spare time to schedule it correctly it will be done.
Running any kind of windows server is not an option.
This is his statement made on March 13th:

I don't want to open up this can of worms again, there is a long thread all about this topic. What it boils down to is not the hardware, or the number of servers that we run. It's due to the flavour of Linux that we run, CentOS (5.x), it used to be one of the recommend options for a gameserver box, but not anymore. The server hardware itself rarely goes above half load. The planning, rebuild and switch to Debian (or Ubuntu) isn't something I've found time to do. It needs coordination with data-centre and down time of a day or 2.
However, I do totally empathise with your feelings towards the game servers performance. None of us are denying that the game servers are underperforming at present.
I totally agree with you Dazed. For me it wasn't a problem in the past, because it never affect my gameplay. But yesterday it was even for me unplayable. I really hope the major lags are gone again. Does anybody know, why there were major lagspikes yesterday, while it wasn't that hard the time before? Did anything changed?

Re: server lag
The major pauses usually happens on player joins.

Re: server lag
Try using some of the tools like 'ping' and 'tracert' to see where the laggs are happening
If you've got 10 hops from your PC to the server and number 7 is causing the spikes, then I suspect theres nothing that can be done...
Ah no... Problem was on my side =/ Still dunno why, but my ping jumps from 25-300 and back. Had the same problem on another server today. So, maybe the HH-Server is still the same and the lags aren't heavier.
Server performance isn't degrading, it's remaining fairly constant. There will be times when connectivity problems occur nationally or locally. As mentioned in numerous threads on this topic, if you are experiencing unusual amounts of lag, then try running a traceroute (tracert) to thehh.co.uk (alternatively run a traceroute from our server to you.)
