It turns out to be bloody fun. And a surprise. Basically you're not actually playing the game proper till the space stage. So, if you're getting a bit fed up with the limited options on the early stages, stick with it.

Re: Well, Spore is out.
I dont think a game where you have to trudge through 10 hours of doing the same thing over adn over again to get to the supposedly 'good bit' (which itself gets dull quickly) is a decent game

Re: Well, Spore is out.
i played it for an hour last night ...it looks alright, but it doesnt quite live up to the hype. Obviously thats just first impressions, it might turn out to be awesome in the later stages.

The thing is with Spore is you get out of the game what you put in it. If you're not interested in creating the history of a lifeform -only in the transparent numbers and mechanics the game plays by, you'll be badly dissappointed. Yes, they are fairly simple. But it's a mass market game, and while it's simple it by no means insults your intelligence like a lot of casual shovelware does.
It's all about whether you'll care about what you make. The first fives stages, while doubling in complexity each step, are basically minigames. Space is where it's at: It's a 4x game with a fine attention to detail. Though rather than flat menus as your only means of effecting the galaxy you have the spaceship you designed yourself. Then with said spaceship you're off doing your own thing.
It's a great game that is geared for easy creating. It's all about imagination and how much the little things please you. I personally love gradually tweaking my species from cells, to simple four legged creatures to bipedal sapients. Then thinking "Well how would a race of land sharks build THEIR houses cars and boats?" And building them.
You can swoop over random planets abducting creatures for your own zoo world, or simply blow up the whole planet. Or you can terraform it, carving valleys, adding fauna and flora plucked from other planets and build a colony to trade with your neigbouring star empire. It's all about what you put into it!
And it takes about 3 or 4 hours to get to space. NOT 10.
