Far Cry 2 and DRM SecuROM
While looking around for the best place to buy Far Cry 2 (because I can't get it on Steam , but that's another story) I found the page for the game on Amazon. This game, which is out on Friday, has now got a rating of two out of five already.
This is because of the (in my opinion) idiots, bad rating it because it has SecuROM. Has anyone intelligent (ie, all us wonderful forum users ) ever really had a problem with this.
My only real experience with this was through Bioshock, and I had no problems, but would really be interested in any other experiences.
Translating from a Spanish web, this is the info that given by bukowsky113, Ubisoft's official forum manager:
-You have 5 activations, that can be used in up to 3 different PCs.
-Uninstalling the game restores an activation. This process is called "revocation". This way, as long as you always uninstall correctly, you will be able to install the game as many times as you want in 3 different PCs.
-You can upgrade your computer as many times as you want, using Ubisoft's revocation system.
-Ubisoft pledges to support its games, additional activations may be given.
-Ubisoft pledges to supports its games in the long run, you will always be able to play Far Cry 2.
I think this system could lead to some problems; i.e. not being able to uninstall because of virus or broken hardware, or that the program detects a big hardware upgrade as a whole new computer.
If I understand correctly, the only way your PC would know how many times you've installed something is via the registry or a dll installed into your windows folder. The registry problem is easily fixed. And isn't a problem in my book. Something like Crap Cleaner could easily remove it (manually if you know what you're doing). Strange dll's being installed without my knowledge into a critical OS folder is.
That said, I havent had a problem with anything that has Securom on it (apart from it not telling me it was there).
But I haven't bought a game with anti piracy measures this heavy handed, yet. It's just another level of hassle I don't really want to put up with.
