It's (deep breath) an objective based co-operative/competative zombie survival horror game being deveoped by Turtle Rock Studios They previously colaborated with VALVe on Counter Strike:Condition Zero as well as maps and the bot mechanism in Counter Strike Source.
Players can group as a team of 4 Survivors Vs the AI controled Infected. The good part though is that another 4 players can join the Infected bots to compete against the Survivors with special powers like being able to see Survivors through walls, do massive leaps etc.

Re: VALVes next big thing is....
Meh, Nothing special. They should focus on tf2 for the mean time with the new maps that its screaming out for ( I know soon ) And the fact I don't really like the "zombie genre"
The concept sounds nice - especially that the players infected will spawn as boss zombies of different types depending on choice. Can't wait to sit on the roof in the dark, and wait for a survivor to get close enough down below, to grab him/her with my mutated tongue - then run away and hide, and wait for the next one to get eaten. On the other hand, playing survivor and seeing your mates bing dragged screaming into a dark corner followed by sounds of bloody murder, is gonna be pretty creepy =P
Also gonna be fun to survive - no matter what you do, you know that there'll soon be a horde of zombies coming for you. No where to hide, no where to run, only thing to do is hope you can aim good enough and have enough ammunition (Hopefully you gotta fight your way to ammunition storages etc., gonna put more fun into it if you running low and the horde is getting closer)
Also there's friendly fire integrated into the game play - you better watch out you don't kill your teammates. Because if they die, there's no one to help you when a zombie starts chewing your face off. Hopefully it'll be so that you really cannot stay alive on your own - meaning that even the biggest jerks of the gaming world will HAVE to rely on others, and thereby help them to survive, even if its for their own goals.

Been following this closely too being a big fan of the Zombie genre as a whole. There are too few decent Co-op games out there atm -the last enjoyable one I played was the co-op mode in Chaos Theory (Splinter Cell) and theres nothing better than blasting through a game with a mate... Love some of the ideas for the Zombies too, the big 'boomer' bloated guy who can explode at the push of a button and nasty-ass fast one that can stalk u across the roof-tops...

GoW co-op... would LOVE to try it, but u are quite right... not found anyone for a 2 player yet... tho the DM scene is vaugely active...
Seriously though guys... if u like TF2 there's a pretty good chance you'll get some fun out of L4D... I'ts all about balance again... and the fact u can step in and control these Zombie bad-boys will be awesome for when u get tired of blasting away. ive heard all the characters have diff weapons and abilities also... Im also hoping they keep in the mechanic where you can block off rooms and doors with physics objects... could be spooky as hell....
Something I'd def consider funding a server for maybe at a later date....
