Why I hate Microsoft Live! and why not to buy Shadowrun
Ok I thought this game looked like a laff, saw it for £15 and put off buying Test Drive Unlimited to give it a go... What a fool I am...
I already have a basic Live! (exclamation mark ofc) account which works fine for Gears of War (a decent game i might add)... However on installing Shadowrun it sternly told me i had to update my version of Live! which i obligingly did... only to reboot and get the error 'failed to initiate live! for Windows components'... Many others have had this problem and there isnt an obvious fix...
All I wanted to do was shoot some Elves and teleport through walls... Serves me right for trying to buy another shooter
So if u fancy buying shadowrun... DONT... its pretty poo anyway- I got it running offline with some bots and it played like something from a few years ago. Just goes to show how much work Microsoft have put into Live!!!! (excla-bloody-mation mark) for Windows... steer well clear.

It looked like some crappy Weapon Factory mod which was already a crappy TF mod and with the Windows Live bullshit attached i figured it would be wise to give this one a pass. Guess that was a smart move.

Re: Test Drive Unlimited. The online component of the PC version of this game is now redundant. A Gamespy account was required to play online and they ran the servers. They all closed down around 5 months ago. Single player is only really good for a chill-out free roaming drive around. As regards Microsoft Live! I personally wouldn't touch it. There are plenty of hacks around to bypass having to use it. Halo 2 for PC is a prime example. It was supposed to be a Vista only, Live! enabled product but was hacked to run on XP within days. Runs around 15% faster too!

Re: Why I hate Microsoft Live! and why not to buy Shadowrun
Im interested in the non-live hacks mate- Shadowrun is also a Vista only release, and suffers for it. I've recently set up a dual boot with XP and, although it's not given me the performance i should have, it's rendered things like Crysis playable at last- crazy really when u look at my machine.
Do these hacks still allow online play? Admittedly Shadowrun isnt all that great but it sucks against bots and half of the reason for buying it was so i could thrash some 360 owners... damn them, must be nice to just get a game and it to work! Some of the play mechanics are pretty nice too and could be developed further- but a few factors cant be ignored. When you jump it feels like you're on a zero gravity level from UT, the radial menu is broken and better on the 360, the bots are awful and go about their buisness with no relation to what you're doing, the buy screen is a direct rip of CS.. but with no key sortcuts I can find and with 4 different areas- weapons, tech, magic and er, something else, its far too time consuming. But I guess it's worth a play if I can find this hack before it goes up on Ebay for a tenner.
Also no online on Test Drive?? that was why I was gonna bloody buy it! damn them... Didnt have a driving game (unless u count trackmania, which ofc you should!) and remember it doing quite well in reviews... what a shame. Also Microsoft have decided to shut down all of their shadowrun support, ALL of it, including past forum posts. Im thinking it wasnt' that popular on the PC, and rightly so.

No. there was a company called Falling Leaf Systems working on legitimate software to allow Vista only games and Live!, to work with xp but after searching it seems they have ceased to be. Bill Gates must have sent the boys 'round click

My bad! apparantly it's still up but there are connection issues. A patch is available which is supposed to solve this issue amongst other things. patch clicky
(*Mad re-installs TDU*) VRROOOOOOM!

But they didn't suffer in the slightest if you knew anything about the game...Its the first to allow pc gamers to play against console...Did you even instal the patches? it is a good game but like ut3...against bots its no good. Basically it takes the idea of classes and makes a really descent game out of it.

Re: Why I hate Microsoft Live! and why not to buy Shadowrun
Sorry slash- the patches haven't worked and, as ever, I've been pretty thorough in my efforts to get it to work. The cross-platform play was one of the main reasons i bought it and, like I said, I wanted to shoot elves and teleport through walls so I'm well aware of the game mechanics. I dont think I would even mention it in the same sentance as UT3, though much props to the developers for the interesting slant on a pen and paper rpg... we need more ideas like that.
i can understand that you like the game if you're playing it on a 360... which I know you are as I know u dont have Vista. very good feedback from the console owners though...

Re: Why I hate Microsoft Live! and why not to buy Shadowrun
Slash- if you would be kind enough to show me the link for the patch that would actually allow me to go online I would love to have a game with you (you would thrash me im sure!)....
Id been waitting to buy the game for some time and would love to get it working other than just fragging bots with the IQ of a used pair of boxers (apologes for the analogy)...
Trust me I want to play the game.... just the fact that they TOTALLY destroyed their suppot network and forums left me a little in the dark.... a little like playing Zombie Panic with your last barricade and being the only survivor... only to find the zombies had kille the lights....
That mod needs work btw... but give it half an hour and you will enjoy it... especially if u are the super strong carrier Zombie... well worth a try- and Geeolata... We MUST have a gane soon!!!
