Now I loved Operation Flashpoint. It wasnt the greatest in the graphics department, but that wasn't where the appeal lied. This was probably the first true military simulator. You could be a lowly grunt in a battalion of troops assaulting an enemy stronghold, a tanker blowing 8 shades of the proverbial out of the enemy, or a top gun wiping out armoured columns in your attack helicopter or ground attack fighter.
One of the aspects that made it such a success and fun to play was the vast number of community created addons and the excellent mission editor (I made a few myself).

Now everyone wanted Armed Assault to be everything the original game was only prettier and with better physics. Basically a commercial version of VBS1 (an actual military training tool that came out of OpF with improvements) with some graphical tweaks and physics boosts.

But gradually it became clear that this wasn't to be the case.

Screenshots showed higher poly counts on models, better textures, HDR etc. But frankly it didnt look much different. Ok, it was only an "upgrade" of the original engine, but you couldn't help but wonder what they had been doing for the past 2 years. After all, the bulk of the engine is still there. They aren't writing a completely new one.
A rushed release, full of bugs and poor performance issues that not even the original Flashpoint had on release, coupled with the fact the first (Czech) version shipped with that dubious bit of copy protection software Starforce saw it stumble and fall from grace. Unfortunately, for a lot of fans, it wasnt the game they had been hoping for. Only the deluded and hardcore stayed with it, in the hope it would improve as Flashpoint did.

I decided against buying it because I already had the original, why get a new one for £40 when it's practically the same game?

So here we are, 2008, and for the first time I have tried the now updated demo. Now you could say why lambast it if you havent even played it? For the simple reason that my PC wouldnt have handled it back then.

Would I pay for it now?

Eh, no. I can't say why, but somehow it feels worse than the original. It just felt like it was banged together in a shed by a mod team rather than a proper developer. Graphically, to run decently, it doesnt look much different to the original. It could have been my drivers, or the fact that its only a demo, but post proscessing made everything so blurry I had to turn it to low (you cant turn it off) to see further than a few metres clearly.
One complaint that arose early on release was the flight model, and its apparent inferiority to the previous games. I can say it isnt terrible, but not far off. Flying was well tuned (not perfect, but it worked in the engine) and with practice, great fun. Somehow they broke it. Helis can no longer (for some reason) use the tail rotor to rotate whilst flying, unless they are hovering. It just refuses to move otherwise.
Ground combat, hasn't really changed much from the original. No bad thing, but why did they mess with the crouch and prone buttons? You now have to press a seperate button to stand back up again rather than just repress the first one. It's just fiddly and unnecessary.

Judging by this, its a been a case of diminishing returns for Bohemia Interactive. Operation Flashpoint will always be superior.

lol

I dont have the game but a friend of mine does, saw him on it once.

The engine looks dated compared to modern ones like unreal. Looks very hard aswell even on easy, getting killed by one shot, a new player playing would find it hard.

Don't worry, I didnt think many people would end up reading all of it. ;) After I typed it I immediately reinstalled OFP, and boy, it really is better.

Operation Flashpoint was very trial and error, so ArmA would be the same. Immensly rewarding when you finish a mission though.
And OpFlash wasnt all serious military stuff either (though the vast majority of addons and mods were, but brilliant all the same). You've got great things like working Stargates plus various other things from that, Warhammer 40K stuff, Lego, American Civil War units, mechs, laser guns, sports cars (including a Formula 1 Ferrari), and so many other units you could spend weeks trying them all out. The Terminator versus dinosaurs, brilliant.

Maybe Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising from Codemasters (who own the rights to the name now) will be better. The graphics look on a par with CoD4 yet will retain OFP's open world realism. This pic and the video are from the ingame engine apparantly. Only problem I can see is that it's also in development for X360 which doesn't bode well for the PC version.
