OpenTTD is an open source simulation game based upon Transport Tycoon Deluxe. I know absolutely nothing about Transport Tycoon or how it works but it does include multiplayer (as of writing I don't know exactly how to set up a multi player game but it should be fairly easy). Looks like a lot of fun with a few people playing.

The game supports up to 255 players in one game so plenty of room.

I've been hearing about this for a while, I miss the old simcity/RCT type games so maybe I should jump in now.

edit - is there a way to scale up the interface without going into fullscreen mode? The text is a bit too small for me.

Sure. How does multiplayer work? Is it a persistent server like Minecraft?

I'm having trouble getting past the basics of just setting up a railway line between a coal mine and a power station

I've just set up a server on our dedicated box. You can find it in the OpenTTD server browser as 'Hampshire Heavies'. It is also connectable via the usual 'thehh.co.uk' address.
