Re: It cannot be ignored any longer: DayZ
It's quite fitting I find that a zombie mod has caused a 3 year old game from a nobody CZ dev to rise from the grave and to the top of the sales charts. hehe
Really is testament to the unique 'something' that this game has over others and why it keeps me wanting to go back for more when I'm not playing it. It's really hard to define it in words, but I shall have a try.
Some of the key points I think are the brutal difficulty and total lack of hand holding. This is really refreshing to some of us jaded older ones to see this coming back, in the old days games were just stupidly hard though and often to a point they were broken, sometimes on purpose too. Today in mainstream we have the 'everyone has to be special and great' attitude pervading and it's making games dull, boring and easy for the harder-core longtime gamer, but more accessible to the masses. DayZ gets this balance just about right I think, brutally hard but not brokenly so.
Then you get the freedom of the 225 square kilometer playing area. It's really something to behold and goes a long way to move the game towards feeling more real than a lot of games have done.
It successfully creates its own tension and scares without resorting to cheapness/bo-scare normal crap. Being alone and stumbling around in a forest or wilderness in the dark, really does capture what that feels like when you do it for real, and that can be scary enough by itself without adding zombies and bandits trying to kill you for your stuff to the mix.
Great game/mod in my opinion. But it does take a lot of player effort to learn the ropes. A lot of forgiveness for the quirky and often buggy engine/coding/mechanics and current Alpha status of the mod. Willingness to set your own goals and tasks to aid your survival (theres no quests set or anything of the like, that's all up to you). Lastly a near masochistic tolerance to starting over from scratch, even though your pimped out character just got unfairly killed. If you can deal with these things, it is an awesome experience.

No bike ride is complete without a zombie precession trailing slowly behind you

On my latest character I have finally got some luck
Currently in possession of 2 Crossbow's (1 for Swampthing), a Ghillie Suit (So hard to spot me in woodland now), a Camping Tent (hoping to save for a good server), m1911 with 5 clips, 2 Filled Water Bottles (again 1 for Swampthing) and plenty of bandages/morphine/blood to keep me going
I am trying to find myself a big bag atm, already got one double the original size but have read about Alice Packs being the best, with the only problem being people griefing the entrance to churches on some servers with barbed wire, therefore preventing anyone one from ever getting in there, including themselves
How big is the dowload for this chaps? I'm painfully tempted to buy it through the method that Frog suggested earlier, but my download speed is beyond shocking (220kbs on average).
