Post My Dell Dimension 5000 needs a memory upgrade
Hi there folks, I think its time my PC had a memory upgrade.
Now I am not in the mood to buy a new computer, not until my computer throws up and shoots an electrical power serge through my body which could nearly kill me. (Touch wood please don't happen).

I love my computer for what it is. Sure its an old machine, but a lot of the stuff I have for it is pretty impressive. (Graphics Card, Hard Drive, Monitor.) Most importantly, it seems to run my internet so well! (Which is why you see me with 5 ping every time lads).

But recently you may have been hearing my shouting "AH FUCK LAG!" Every time you give me a uber, or when you run in front of my face scorching Pyro flames everywhere. No its not my Ping lag, its my MEMORY lag.

Yes the only catch to this computer is that it has 512mb as its memory speed with 2x 256mb Ram chips inside of it taking two out of the four slots it can support.

I was thinking that I could upgrade this two 2.5gb by buying 2x 1gb ram chips.

This is when you come in guys, can you find me 2x 1gb ram cards which supports the Dell Dimension 5000's needs? I've tried before and nearly wasted £20.00 trying to buy more ram.

Here's the Ram Specs:
Memory Type: DDR2
Memory Speed: PC2-4200
Chipset: Intel 915G Express
Memory Type: Non-ECC Non-Registered,
Memory Slot(s): 4
Max. Memory Per System: 4096MB (4GB)
Max. Memory Per Slot: 1024MB (1GB)
Dual Channel Memory Support: Supported
Install Memory in Pairs: Not Required

I want this ram to be cheap! So try to find me the lowest price possible please.
Thanks guys.

Here ya go

2 of those would max your machine out, and it will work with that chipset (I checked)

£26.62 for a 2Gb Kit

Bear in mind unless your on 64 bit windows only 3.5 gig of that ram will register...

I looked up the chipset and the stuff I picked out is the right timing for it. You can get (slightly) cheaper stuff but its generic.

Be very careful - if it supports max 1gb per slot then it only supports low density memory. You need to make sure the memory you buy has 16 chips on it (1gb stick) or 8 chips on it (512mb stick). Newer memory is high density and the 1gb sticks nowadays tend to be 1/2 a 2gb stick - ie 8 chips on one side only of the stick of ram. This will NOT work in your board.

If you phone crucial rather than web order you can specify double sides sticks (model number will end in .16xx) rather than take the chance of a single sided stick (model number ends in .8xx). You cannot specify this via the web (as it doesnt show you this final part of the model number).

Failing that I know these kits are double sided and are currently on offer for £34.

Pilsy, those kits are more than that chipset can take. Just so you know. The ones I linked to are OCZ too though, may still be ok.

How can they be more than that chipset can take when pc8500 is backwards compatible to any DDR2 speed.

Only issue I can see is that mixing memory modules can be a pain.
