Or to be more precise, its only starting up once in a while.
Heres how my computer normally starts,
Power button pushed Fans start up (high) Mobo Beeps and fans slow down some Bios loads Normal startup from there
Problem is that 1/3 (now 2/3) times it will typically not beep and the fans will just keep spinning on high (this is the CPU fan btw)
The only somewhat solution ive found it to turn off the computer, then power it down via the PSU wait for computer to depower then turn it on again, however even this is starting to fail and im worried that in the end it will just simply not start all together. No bios loads so im fairly sure its not a dud startup, could be faulty component i suppose
Components are: X1900xt Radeon 512mb Graphics (overclocked a fraction, but i believe this started before i did that) E6400 2.13ghz Dual Core Processor 200gb SATA Hard drive GA-965P-DS3 Motherboard 2 Gigabyte Corsair High Speed Ram DVD drive 580W Hiper PSU
Its been steadily getting worse for a month or so now, ive backed up stuff in preparation for the (probably inevitable) failure to start up completely, any thoughts? any definate "component X needs replacing"?
I'm sure i had a problem like this before, turned out to be the PSU on its way out, took aleast 2 boots to get into windows, first boot would always result in nothing.
If you can get hold of a PSU to test, do it, not very good for the system for the PSU to go, aleast you can check it.

Re: PC not starting up
I had the same kind of problem. same psu btw. but with me, every time i started my pc a fuse blew. i guess its time to invest in a new one.
Well the beeps usually are used to signify whether the hard drive is working or not, thats what mine does, Push button, fan coems on load chugs abit damn dust , 2 beeps from HD to say its working, loads up into XP
When my hard drive went though you could tell as it took 30 mis or more to get into windows properly and read anything irc etc of the HD, another if daft thing i had was 2 minute boot up due to my mouse over locking the usb ports and my keyboard was making it load up slow for soem reason, swaped the slot around works fie so test all that stuff 1st
Atleast you know why i have a cupboard full of old parts now, trial and error on which is dead.
Could be something to do with the boot sector of your HD as it sounds liek it runs out of thins to do ie cant read of the HD or something
Pilsy will tell you whats wrong though

Re: PC not starting up
The short beep is normal, it means your boot process has passed (valid cpu, memory, video card, working mobo). No beep means you're not even getting as far as the POST.
It does sound like you PSU is on the way out tbh. If you find that you have to power-down for longer and longer each time before you boot succsessfully, this would be a good indication.
Probably best to get it tested to be sure though, using your machine with a bad PSU will eventually lead to other hardware failiures.

Re: PC not starting up
Ive also had a problem like this, it progressively got worse over 6 months untill the computer just stopped booting at all. I tested my PSU on other boards and they booted fine. After a while I found that powering down, unplugging, removing my memory dimms plugging them back in and booting up would work. I then tried my memory in another board and the same thing happened. So I decided it was the memory. I ran a memtest check thingy and the memory came out fine. I thought about buying some more mem, then thought no sod it and bought a new computer(mboard, cpu, mem), so the problem was never really completely solved.
So yeah Id say check memory and psu, swap with alternatives if possible to check
