PiLsY I'm still umming and arring over PSU's myself mate... esp now I want to add my other Sata drive. you got any in?
- this partition nonesense has to stop!

You got any big-boy Antecs? Or even something like an 850w for the time being... I'm in trouble for using alot of electricity as it is!

That memory will do you proud Bo. OCZ are not to be sniffed at! lifetime guarantee on mine (and all ocz I think) and rly good sticks!

You should have a good machine here.

The OCZ's will be good regardless - theyll run tight latencies at lower speeds. The Kingston modules I've found work best with 5-5-4-15-38 timings - thing is theyll do 1066mhz easily at 1.8v and 1200mhz at 1.95v+ so you just get HUGE bandwidth.

You'll need a fan (UNLESS it has heatsinks like Khola's) for memory if you're going to be using over 1.9v. Either buy a ram cooler fan (corsair or ocz) or use zip ties and any old fan you have lying around. I'll send you a fan speed reducer with the cpu so you can copy it for any fans you need to lower the rpm on.

Kingston kits are £38 for 2 x 1gb HyperX PC9200 c5 straight out the box.
Pre-tested to run 1200mhz 5/5/4/15/42 @2v kit £50.

Remember that your motherboard has to be capable of running DDR1200. I do my testing on a P35 chipset (Gigabyte P35 DS3R rev2.0) as that is the only board I have that can manage DDR1200 or more. My DFI P35 DK could "only" manage 1155mhz but did this at 1.8v for basically every stick.

My advice with these Kingston sticks is to use either the 4:5 or 5:6 divider (266/800 or 333/800). Aim for 433mhz or higher depending on which strap divider your board likes best. You should do your testing using the 8x cpu multiplier and set your cpu volts to something like 1.35v to eliminate your cpu as a limiting factor. Set memory volts to whatever in bios gives you around 1.88v in hardware monitor in bios. Use memtest86 v2.10 bootable cd iso for pre-boot testing so you dont corrupt your hard disk (link also takes you to a brilliant support and resource forum), specifically test 5 initially then test 7 to check for hard disk corruption. Start at 426mhz 4:5 divider (1066 memory) or 444mhz 5:6 divider (1066 memory) and start going up 5mhz at a time, do a couple of tests in memtest #5 and #7, escape key to restart pc and go into bios and add another 5mhz. Keep going until you get errors then either stop until you get memory cooling ar up the volts and keep going if you have the ram cooled already.

Once you've found your fsb/memory limit then go back to default cpu/fsb (9.5 x 333) and start increasing fsb to find your cpu speed/voltage/temperature sweet spot. Use the cpu multiplier to match your cpu speed as close to your fsb/memory speed as possible and you're away.

This wasn't sposed to be an overclocking lesson but thats what happens when the boss takes a day off i guess :P.

Forgot to say - I've got nothing in for power supplies mate as I dont get much call for them so I dont like having them sat around :). Im not well off enough for a big stock ;).

Those Tagan supplies on OCUK are simply awesome. I'd get the 800w one, but the 700w will be brilliant as well. for less than £70 you cant buy better.

The only other bargain at the mo is the FSP700 GLN OEM version that pops up on scan today only quite regularly for £35 or less. Its the grey non sli version of the FSP/Sparkle Epsilon 700watt which retails for £90. Bargain is an understatement.

Safest way to do it would be to set up your new pc with your old one still running. Myself and the other guys on here are always contactable via steam or irc. I'll send you my mobile anyway.

Are you definitely going for the ip35 pro? Hope they stay in stock long enough for you!

When you buy B Grade you get nothing but the bare board in a box. You can live without the io shield as it gives better breathing to the PWM heatsinks anyway. The extra cables you wont need anyway. I'll send you a sata cable with the hdd if you want it, ive got dozens of the bloody things.

Download the drivers and manual beforehand and get yourself prepped. I'd get all the drivers you want to use (tested, dont try new stuff!) into a folder and use Vlite to slipstream them (with SP3) onto a windows XP disk. Just google Vlite for info, its dead easy :). That way all you do is install windows off the CD and youre done. Hitoshura has an IP 35 Pro, so maybe chat with him regards drivers?

Read up on overclocking reviews of the board - there are tons. I favour xtremesystems.org , overclockersclub , tweaktown and xbitlabs for reviews. They tend to give you good info on finding an optimal bios setup to start clocking from. If you have an idea in your mind of what your bios will look like and what you want to set then you'll find your build goes a lot smoother and quicker.

OCZ vindicator 2 heatsink for £27 delivered. If you're unsure regards heatsink get this.

Post Re: new processor
goddamn. this should really be called "Pilsey and co's (cause there are other people offering advice even if they occsaionally get steamrolled over) grotto of technical wizzardry"

anyway oh wizzards;

a month a go i aske some questions along the same line about getting a new system. and so i bring it up just cause it's a week till christmass:

firstly: any idea roughly how long after christmass till the prices start falling? (because im stuck in a terrible dillema - do i wait for prices to fall so i can get a cheap machine, or do i buy a mchine soon so i can spend my holiday time playing fallout 3 on my new machine)

secondly: money over sense. The prices/products that are being mentioned here are to a sensible budget. but i intend for my budget to be more in the +10% more money then sense idea. My thoughts originally were on getting a Nvidia 260 in the region of £200-230. but the mobo im getting (DFI lan party) is crossfire compatible only. Now i dont see myself getting two gfx cards straight away but perhaps in 18 months i'll get another one. Bearing that in mind my question is recommendations for a nice ATI card please. price range 150-250.

Procs: does the recommendation of the duel core processor e8400-e8600 stand if the budget is increased slightly £100-150 maybe a bit more if justified?

also OS's: I got me a legit copy of XP pro corp but tis only 32 bit. Is it worth me getting a 64 bit OS and paying for it?

and ram: 4gb of corsair dominators with that cool fan thing. worth it? i think they're 91 quid atm dont know how much they might drop to after xmas. (pilsey you mentioned prices go up sometimes for ram after xmas?)

the main objective here is to get the machine of my dreams without going too stoopid insane on budget.
