So, one of my old CRT monitors is slowly on its way to the garbage pile. Also, I'm getting a second gaming rig so my brother can use my current one. Said older monitor won't even go above 1024x768, which'd be another reason to get a new one.
However, nowadays CRT monitors are in short supply, and I'm completely new to this LCD business. A bit of helpful advice would be appreciated, particularly on the following subjects:
- What am I looking for in a good gaming monitor? I don't even know what half of the specs mean, much less understand how they translate into actual gaming experience. Is a response time of 5ms good enough? Will a contrast ratio of 1000:1 do, or should I go for 2000:1? That sort of stuff. If there are any particular monitors you'd recommend, that'd be great as well.
- Native resolution. Running stuff in anything less than that tends to look fairly awful, so cranking down the resolution is not an option anymore. The rig hooked up to the monitor would be an Intel C2D E7600 + MSI 9800GT 512MB OC + 2x1GB Kingston 1066MHz DDR2. Is that going to cut it for 1680x1050, or should I stick to lower resolutions?
expensive but appearently one of the only flatpanel that can get close to a crt (just qyotin etf2l forums here, im not that deep into hardware) but if yr comp can run 60-120 fps it whould be awesome.
Have a look here for loads of LCD information and recommendations.
I bought an LG L227WT because of that thread (0ms input lag) and I haven't had any problems with games. I only wish that it could display more colours, but that's just part of the TN technology.

i got the 24" bigger brother of that, its the same just in 1080p and lower mhz. but still an awsomly quick screen, perfect colour and never seen the slightest hint of motion blur

Also, dont buy from OC, their service has gone shitwise over the past 8 months (as pilsy and ntrailz will testify), i myself have been victim to their "well its in stock on our WEBSITE but not the warehouse, we'll just take your money but not send you the stuff until you bother us 15 times" bullshit
thats his site as well so no worries with the supplier cos you got him on steam

IIyama PLE2201W-B 22" here, I've had it a while now so it's not the newest but I had no problem transitioning from a CRT to this. I think anything around this bracket will suffice. Try to get an under 5ms I would say, then you won't have any problems.
As far as colours go I'm no movie fanatic or graphics whizz so 1000:1 (mock 3000:1 w/e the overdrive thingie function does :f) looks fine too me in games.
Always having to run in native res can be a drain on resources aye, think you should be fine with that card tho, as it's more powerful than mine.

Mines a fairly cheap one, its a FLATRON W1934S (great name) but it has this usefull feature worth looking out for, at the click of a button i can change its res from 16:10 to 4:3. This is great for gaming as i can run stuff like tf2 on 4:3 settings (better fps for me) and never have problems with older games that dont support widescreen. No idea if this is a common thing in monitors but i couldnt live without it now.

Mine hasnt got it bfox, and yes that does sound handy, had a few older games been a pain with widescreen recently.
my getup (that the time of first post) 8600 gtx, ocz flexII @1200mhz, E8500 @4.5ghz can run tf2 @ 1080X1920 on min settings @ 45 fps. not ideal but doable. your rigs not too diff from mine. except all the ott watercooling
