Ram problems.. 6GB Crucial kit (xmp) unstable with OC :(
I was happy to recieve me new 6GB of Crucial Ballistix DDR3 PC12800 (1600mhz -in line with my current over-clock @ bclk 160mhz RAMx10, CPUx20/21)
So problem so far is that without it's XMP profile on (an unexpected and unwanted extra) it will not boot @ it's stock 1600mhz 8-8-8-24 settings; even if all is entered correctly. Nasty continued throbbing beep on a Gigabyte EX58 UD3R...
The only way I've found to get the Ram to boot at stock speed is by first enabling the xmp profile (which also shuts my multiplier bk to 133x20 etc) then changing them all back to the 160bclk Overclock settings. The only problem is that in Ram-heavy stress tests it's incredibly unstable... I can only think the profile may lock the Voltage @ it's stock 1.65v or something. When all is altered back the Overclock works with the XMP still on and the CPU-heavy tests in P95 etc run fine so it's definately memory Voltage.
I've got the good man PilsY on the problem but due to cashflow issues I need to work out whether to send this back pretty sharp-ish (e.g tommorow) so I thought id throw it open in case the man/myth busy!
Am currently running my Overclock without the mem-profile but with the RAM multiplier x8 @1280mhz, also took timings down to 7-7-7-20 and it appears perfectly stable so I cant see why it wont run @ 1600 8-8-8-24? Has to be voltage right? Stick's stock is 1.65v, same as my last sticks and same timings. Was running them @ 1.7v in last profile but wondering if they need more being 2gb sticks? -Only thing is when trying to stabilise tests with the profile on and altered higher voltages seemed to cause a non-boot...
Apologies to all non-techy folk who have no interest in Memory!
If you need the cash then send them back - you can always buy it again. However, I don't think there's any problem with the memory, think it just needs some tinkering. Read through my pm and try that out, let me know how it goes.
GL!

STILL got these sticks clocked at 1400 cause the damn XMP mode either crashes on boot or defalts to stock speed. atm it's at 175x20 -3.5GHz 4 threads 1600 RAM @ 1400
I thought i'd run my desktop diagnostics and post them as even I dont get the i7 turbo results....(after gaming quite hard, not quite cooled to base level and I have EIST off, c1 off but the other C states on as i want full power all the time on this profile.)

what is a 'normal' range for QPI\VTT when overclocked? I've seen graphs showing this chip hit 4gb on a smaller cooler so would be nice to move up a notch. can still Game 1080p with most stuff maxed but having to cut down on AA for the odd game so new Rig soon-ish.
THe GPU stuff I just put up as im chuffed how high this card is going!
Any help is golden
In the mean-time it would be great to finally get it solved

Got my Turbo mode working today- usually just pushed my OC over the edge. Was indeed a little sprinkle of QPI/VTT voltage that stablised it in the end combined with a little twiddling!

Am a little chuffed now! What with recently clocking my GTX670ftw to over 1300Mhz GPU and 3300Mhz Ram (with headroom im sure- it's on a 280 PCB)
Wouldnt usually use Turbo for an OC- but with my memory too stubborn to pass 1400mhz it does no harm (that god awful 'XMP'- which simply resets to stock and wont clock stable after... never buying crucial or anything with xmp again!!)
I reckon a trade-off of 200mhz RAM speed to 1.01ghz CPU is worth it!!
What with both OC's being done at the same time it's a definate improvement in games with the occasional stutter or being able to add another layer of AA. Should last till 'upgrade-mas'...
