I love the lighter Linux distros - I used to run Xubuntu on my old Toshiba Portege I got free from when I worked at LINX - basically Ubuntu with xfce desktop (faster than gnome, or used to be anyway, haven't done much with Linux lately) - Win XP used to run like a dog on it, installed this and it was amazing. (Taught me a lot about Linux as well because Ubuntu wasn't quite so user friendly then).

You've made me want to go out and buy a Netbook just to put something nice on it now lol.

Check if it got GMA500 graphic card in it before you install linux, there has been a bloody mess with those
