O2 will block you from steam unless you use a vpn, 30 day expiry on credit bought.
Mobile broadband, like wired was in its infancy is not what its cracked up to be. Yes you can use it anywhere but beware of the following:
Even with a good signal you will have some packet loss, causing errors while browsing ranging from a missing picture on a page to a page failing to load altogether.
Latency is high, the best i've seen on pay&go is approximately 300ms, rendering online gaming as stressful as it is enjoyable [at least for me].
As with wired bb, the speed issue. the norm is 3.5Mb/s although 7Mb/s is fast rolling out, although you're buggered if youll ever see this speed. Best I've seen from a dongle was 150KB/s, which didn't seem to be sustainable.
The dongles I've seen appaer to share out a broadband connection at the local mast, as connected machines display a local ip address as rather that the public IP you'd expect from a machine directly hooked up to a modem. This can cause issues with programs that utilise NATing in any way.
Long story short, best bet is to borrow someones dongle and see if you can do all you'd want to when on the move before giving your cash away. Otherwise you could end up bitterly disappointed.
erm, 3g is alittle vague: whats its max connection speed? if its one of the newer 7.0Mb/s ones then yes please! if its not HSDPA it aint worth jack anyway though
Better question is to ask what Minty wants to use it for...
Might just be me taking a wild guess, but I doubt he's going to want to play tf2 whilst on holiday - maybe check emails and that sort of stuff, but gaming whilst away, nah...
