My family uses a Thompson Gateway TG585v7 Router, it came free with Be Broadband deal. We have 3 Computers using it, mine connected by wireless, the laptop also using wireless and my Dads work PC is connected with an ethernet cable. A day or two ago I started getting terrible lag spikes, so I ran a tracert to google and the problem seems to be between me and the default gateway. Pinged the default gateway from the laptop and it had the same problem, but my Dads PC has a perfect connection to the router, so whatever is wrong seems to be a problem with the wireless. I haven't completely lost connection to the internet, while I'm just running ping -t I get 30ms or so, but as soon as I start using the internet, like streaming from youtube or playing online it'll climb to 2kping and then start timing out completely.
So, I'm pretty sure I've narrowed the problem down to the wireless, and I'm fairly certain its not my wireless adapter either, so I'm guessing the problem exists with the router. Anybody know what could be causing this? Some sort of interference from another wireless source? Would a firmware change on the router be to blame? Had anybody had a similar problem and solved it? Is there anything I should do before I head off to buy a new router?
wierd i have just had a very similar problem 2 days ago, difference is i was getting high ping on a wired set-up, but still the prob was between the router and my pc.
So far i have got it down from 1k+ ping to around 50-60 average (still higher than the 30 i used to always get). What I did was disable the WEP security on my router. obviously not an ideal solution but maybe something you can do for a temp fix. Also I apparently have a 'strict NAT type' (so MW2 tells me) not entirely sure what this means but I have a feeling its contributing to the ping problem.
Sadly after spending a few hours on google the main cause/solution to it is that my router is simply borked im not so convinced.
Of course this could be a completly unrelated issue I had, as theres no actual wireless devices being effected, but at least something simple to try.

How many wireless networks are you picking up? Might be worth changing the wireless channel.

8 atm, including ours. Its sometimes more, sometimes less.
The reason I thought it may be interference is because there is another Be broadband wireless signal that I am picking up, and it is strange because it alternates between maximum and lowest signal strength. I can't connect to it because its protected, but could this be causing problems? How would I go about changing wireless channel?

Only info I can find relating to that router is:
Change the wireless channel Proceed as follows: 1 Browse to the Thomson Gateway Web Interface. 2 On the left menu, click Home Network. 3 Under Wireless, click your access point. 4 The Wireless Access Point page appears. 5 In the Location bar, click Configure. 6 Under Configuration, select the channel of your choice in the Channel Selection list. 7 Click Apply.
Side note about "Strict" NATting; this is due to uPnP being off or the relevant ports for the program not being forwarded. This is only an issue if you plan to host a game in most cases.

You're a hero, I love you.

If there are many networks, try to find a clear channel.
Bare in mind, some channels over lap with each other so they can degrade performance. Here are 2 diagrams about the same thing.
Yeah, I guessed there would be some overlap so I changed from channel 1 to 7 and now its working perfectly.
Big ty for the help guys, knew it wasn't a waste of time asking for help here
Bfox: Go to http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... rindex.htm and select your router and then whichever game you wish to Port Forward for and it'll generate a step by step guide. That should fix the strict NAT message you get in MW2, although I somewhat doubt it'll fix your ping problems.
