Post Building a new PC
Well...my girlfriend's broken up with me so the money I was saving to go to New Zealand to visit her is now sort of spare...

So I'm going to build a spanking new PC to cheer myself up a bit...and cos, well, I'm fed up of playing on a laptop.

I'm looking to spend about £900 in total, without a monitor. So if anyone's got some free time and is bored, feel free to have a fiddle with components for me lol...

I'm not sure whether to go down the Intel or AMD route at the moment. The Intel CPU I've been looking at is:

Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156 8MB L3 Cache
and the AMD one is:
AMD Phenom II X6 Black Edition 1090T 3.2GHz 9MB Cache 125W

I've heard that the i5 7** series is better than the 6** series, is this true? Is it worth looking at i7 at all? They seem very expensive at the moment. That AMD CPU looks pretty good to me for the price.

Graphics card is where I could really do with some help - All the different types, letters and numbers confuse me hehe. If I went AMD processor I'm guessing I should go ATI graphics, and Nvidia for Intel? Could someone recommend me a good card?

This is my basket on Ebuyer at the moment - Totals £657.37 at the moment, without a graphics card and a few other bits such as extra fans etc.

Coolermaster Elite 330 Black Mid Tower Case - No PSU
ASUS P7P55D iP55 Socket LGA 1156 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor
Corsair 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 i5 Memory Kit CL9(9-9-9-24) 1.65V
Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB Hard Drive SATA II 7200rpm *32MB Cache* - OEM
OCZ GameXStream 850W PSU - Silent 120mm Blue LED Fan 2x PCI-E 6x SATA
Samsung SH-S223 22X DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA - OEM Black

So yeah, any help would be greatly appreciated, mainly on the graphics card and processor!

This is what I was thinking for buying.

You'd be spending around 555.93 pounds.

Post Re: Building a new PC
I've been looking through all the graphic card benchmarks last few weeks as I'm still in two minds about what to upgrade to from my GTX260 (probably will wait till 2011)

Anyways, best bang for buck right now is ATI 5870 (£300 ish) and 5850 (200ish).

Nvidia's 400 series is a bit of a rip at the moment. The cards arent bad but they are overpriced compared to the ATi counterparts. The GTX 480 is the current single GPU king ( just beats the 5870 by 10-15%) but it will set you back £400. The next one down is the GTX470 (bit worse than a 5850 for about £280). Hard to recommend this to anyone right now unfortunately , I usually go with nvidia so this saddens me!

If you wanted to go lower than that theres the ATI 5830 and Nvidia GTX 465....but I wouldnt bother with these if you have the cash for better.

I do look forward to more physx games (nvidia only) so this lack of value for money is poo.Take a look at Mafia 2 :

Anyways ATi this time Id say :)

Have to agree here, ATi have some real nice cards at the moment, and can't scoff at the prices either~

Looking like a pretty sexy lot. Looks like I'm going to have to upgrade the GTS 250 soon if Mafia is anything to go by. :(

What's your monitor, by the way?

Might i recommend this case:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=1120268&source=froogle

Its extremely quiet. The only time I hear anything is when I'm pounding the gfx card in game, but then I'm in game and don't really care.

Also SSD SSD SSD SSD. I'm using a 60Gb one that I run windows and steam from. The size is a bit off putting but the performance is crazy.
Turn computer on.
Monitor wakes up.
Already on desktop.
I just install all my steam games one at a time and copy the steamapps folder to my other drive for each one. It takes about a minute to copy over for one game.
