Post Fake 'Virus' phonecalls...
Recently I've been having about 1 call a month with a foreign guy assuring me I have a a peice of malicious software and if i dont use his system my performance will degrade 'day by day'...

I ofc brushed the first few off with informing that they couldnt have more than my IP (right? last guy didnt even have my name!) and that at that time I had a dual partition and multiple computers and tried to 'talk the talk' as much as possible which did the job in seeing him off..

Now It's just this last guy had a hint of menace about him... the fact that I actually have had a Trojan picked up by avast recently is playing even more on my paranoia! (avast full scan fine, defender fine... any other suggestions for free spyware?)

Could I have found myself in a 'virus hostage!' situation, refusing vital help.... or (as the whiff suggests) just being pressure-sold AV software/ being ripped off...

These have increased for me lately... any of you guys getting the same?

Dunno if his claims could be true, but if you want to be sure about it just do a clean reinstall and yr safe.

This is almost certain a hoax call as I have heard about a similar problem on a local radio station here. Sounds very similar to those that have been described, so I would be cautious of doing anything they suggest.

However a full scan of the system would always be advised I would have thought, but don't let anybody you don't know help you down the phone line.

if you can get the number of the caller or i think even just the time and duration of calls, you can contact your phone peoples and get them to ban the number, just had to do that with a company myself after getting sick of the daily calls.

if theres no number or any info you could try playing along with it and trying to get as much info as poss from the phonecall, without giving any away ofc, thats how i found out the name of the company hassling me.

bit of a chore but the best thing to do really.

really doubt its connected to the trojan tho.

Admittedly I have had a 1 Bsod recently (which i put down to heat) and like I said the Trojan alert (well done avast for picking it up before infection! feel alot safer than with AVG)

What i wants an external HDD... backing up gonna be all on DVD's *sigh*
***EDIT***

Ok or maybe not reading K3D's and ya'lls statement.... It did whiff of something and the guy clearly had no knowledge of what the fault actually was.. And surely any viable company would want to get thier name out there? Not just 'hello there is a problem with your computer'
I did get a name but it was just a standard type name you wouldnt remember...

As long as they're not targeting the IPs themselves and Im in any danger security wise will keep as is for the mo... I'm so not the expert on hacksters. I prefer gleaming hunks of GPU :) (sadly a long way off)

Could prob do with a Re-install anyway if any probs crop up ;)

ugh what a tool!

try Malwarebytes Antimalware. Install, update and then go into safe mode and run it. Picks up almost everything malware/trojan related.

the free version is fully functional. If you pay, you get the extra of constant protection and auto update. Has saved me lots of hours at work when colleagues used to open weird emails.....

I get the same thing khola, maybe once every 2 months. The last time he spoke to my dad who told him i do all the computer stuff in the house and to hold, and the guy put the phone down. So i guess they dont really care about the "problems" as sitting on the phone for 10 seconds is a no no. Try asking him what virus it is and and lots of annoying questions they hate that too.
