For the last week or so iv'e been crashing in game (after a good 20 - 40 mins game time might add) and getting the blank monitor screen with the "Out of Range" message, I've not changed any of the setting in the past year or so and it's not running on the highest settings (just under) so it can't be that, I'm also fairly sure you only get the out of rage message when start playing, not some time into it.
My train of thought is that it's either
The most prominent feeling I'm getting is that my little old 8800 gtx is dying on me.
But I'm holding out hope it could be something with a simple simple-ish fix over heating due to the extreme weather we're currently experiencing or that the power supply is on its last legs, maybe even that i need to update a driver.
Any other things i may be overlooking before i start looking for a new comp?
"Out of range" means no signal from the video card.
Does the system reboot during this?
Had that loads a times when I didn't use the proper screen refresh times or wrong resolution.

Re: Out of Range
Out of range means that the frequency that your gfx card is outputting is too much for the monitor at that resolution.
Bit dodgy, not sure what could be causing that randomly in game.
My 8800 GTX died after 2 years use on the dot. So it might be on the way out like you say. Bummer.
Good news is Nvidia just bought out a decent value/ good performance fermi card , the GTX 460. Its about £150-200 depending on the model. Performs on par with an ATI 5830 at stock or 5850 when overclocked. http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-460-review/1

so the same price as the 4890 for a way shitter card waa waa yeh dx11 whatever, wont make a difference if you can play on your max rez
ok so im guna play the fanboy card forever now (even tho iv only owned 1 ati to 4 nvid's) but i love my 4890 and how fecking badass it is for the price
*edit* oh yeh the question basically agree with what everyone else says. if you have another cable you know is in working order then test it with that, if you have another monitor test that as well as it could be that jenking up (not if your on a crt tho). other than that its gpu related and the card should not be changing values mid flow on its own. but test the monitor thing first

try pulling it out and dismantling the fan and heatsynk and give it a rite good clean out. if it requires you removing the heatsynk forget it tho imo may have a whine when you seat it back in again, also you would need to re apply the thermal paste. not worth it if your considering an upgrade anyway
Yeah I'm just gonna salvage some parts and the case, then cheer myself up blowing an absurd amount of cash on a monster rig.

Slag I'm thinking buying 2 then its a something 20% faster than a GTX480 for £300-400. (Depending on which model you go for) But need a decent socket 775 SLI motherboard first... pants. Or they could make a single card with 2 x GTX260 chips on it....that would be awesome performance/value. http://www.guru3d.com/news/geforce-gtx-460-sli-review/
