Post New PC - Any tips to get started?
Hey guys,

So I finally decided to buy a new PC, which I will get next Tuesday. Since I've had one and just one PC until now (the very one Im writing on), I have no clue how to get started, and what to do first, so I wonder if any of you guys have some tips, maybe a checklist to get it started smoothly.

It will be a decent machine (not so much money to spend), with Windows 7 Home Ultimate (64 BIT). I plan to install Ubuntu later on, side by side with Windows 7, but first, I want to get it running under Windows.

What I thought, would be something like this:

[ ] Firefox
[ ] Antivir
[ ] Winamp (yeah, need music ^^)
[ ] VLC
[ ] Thunderbird
[ ] Steam

-> TF2, WoW, MW2, etc

Im just wondering, what would be the best way to (re)install TF2, since Ive just got the Orange Box, it would certainly take me days to patch up everything. Any ideas with that? Can't I simply put the whole Steam directory on my external drive? (1 TB)

I guess, Ill already download the installers for the aforementionned programs and store them on my external HD, waiting for my new baby to arrive, but suggestions are always welcome (like, what programs do I NEED)

tl;dr: -Getting a new machine, what essential programs do I need?
- Is there a preferable order?
- Any way to reinstall TF2 without having to patch it up for hours?

Thanks!

Steam has a backup option. Right click the game in steam , backup game files and store on the external hd.

the only thing i did was to copy over the whole STEAM folder to the new location and deleted the .blob file. But that's only because the location was a separate directory on C:/ drive originally (C:/GAMES) and not in the Program Files folder.

If i remember correctly, Steam application required a reinstall, but nothing was deleted.

you shouldnt need to do much with windows 7 tbh, i recently got a new mobo, didnt need to reformat or manually do anything just Bam stuck it in and windows auto found all the right drivers etc. same with everything else, its not like the days of xp where nothing works at 1st.

as for programs it doesnt matter what order, other than its wise to get AV set up 1st ofc. i just grab what I need as and when.

one thing i want to say is if you ever want to play older games then sod 64bit. just a hassle and mostly doesnt work, as i play old pc games more than new ones windows 7 64bit was just a complete fail, had to reformat to 32bit to play stuff like theme hospital or max payne etc

Before you start putting stuff on your HD, update Windows first.

I checked out to see if the games I play run on W7 64, and I found this thread on a (German) Windows 7 forum, including a list of games that run on Windows 7 (user-tested).

http://www.windows-seven-forum.de/64-bi ... -t800.html

Arranged by alphabetical order, had a quick look at it, and most games in my collection (its not that big, I usually stick to one game for a looooooong time) seem to run under it (hmm, well, I also have Max Payne... whatever :D)

Otherwise, thanks j-man and frog, didnt know about the backup function (its currently copying, that splitting into parts of pre-determined size is a nice feature) and for that site, if it really works as it advertises, its going to save me so much time! (that is, if Windows recognizes my WLAN card). Also thanks for the hint sophi, Ill try to do it on monday (as my Steam folder is fairly big, and I wont have that much time on my hand this WE)

Cant wait for tuesday... ^^

PS: Ive got an exam on wednesday... grrrraaaaah

This, so much this

I'm assuming your building from scratch, dontmake the same mistake I did, keep all your disks in a safe place, could've saved myself3hours only first pc if I'd kept track of my motherboard install disks

Don't worry too much about backing up tf2, save your usernamefolder if you have custom textures etcbut don't worry bout the gcf file, took me all of 30 mins to redownload tf2 then run it once to build the sound cache then paste the username folder to restore customs.

Other than that backup your documents, build the pc slowly and carefully RTFM, and everything should go smoothly
