For some unknown reason my steam chat is broke, its just a big solid grey box and I cant read messages or talk to anyone, or anything I type seems to come out as jargon.
just a quick heads up, and also anyone got any ideas what this might be? everything else seems fine

ok fixed it by deleting the clientregistry.blob file.
yeah it was really weird, think something major has screwed up my end. i rebooted and couldn't get my PC to recognise the E drive where steam is, faffed about trying to fix that and came across the solution to remove it from devices, reboot and it worked. Then steam crashed on start-up with this:
its pretty special, unfortunately not an indicator of the issue. although in my case a few other things have happened since and it sadly turns out that its more of a physical prob and my actual hard-drive is screwed. lost a fair bit of work
still, i can chat on steam now tho

I have another tech question. kinda reached my limit on this one some advice would be great.
basically what should I do at this point?
The situation is my E drive, an external maxtor 500g has been playing up for a while, often not being recognised and noisy. today several folders have vanished and several others were un-openable. saying they were corrupt. After hours of troubleshooting i have done amongst other things:
2 full virus scans with avast and malwarebyte both with clean results. Tried to chkdsk but it says cannot find path specified Ran seatools utility with no errors found. Ran RegCure with over 5000 errors found and all fixed
This made a small difference, now all the folders that were corrupt are appearing to be empty. Thing is I know all the stuff is still there because its still taking up the room.
So should I right off the HD or could this still be a virus or fixable without reformatting it? if its just broke i should hopefully be able to recover, so im kinda hoping for that lol
ok cool, thanks man. Sounds like a very likely thing to of happened. cool so should be able to rip what I can and not lose the drive, best of both worlds
Time for a new internal I think, and demote externals to just storage.
