Was thinking about getting this:

Trouble is my room/computer is part of a loft conversion which is on a different circuit to the rest of the house. It connects to the same breaker box, but its on a seperate breaker (such that when somebody trips the power with the toaster in the kitchen I still have mains power in my room). The router is on the first floor and is part of the original ring circuit. Does anybody have experience using HomePlug/Powerline with this kind of setup? I've been given mixed answers, some think it'll work as long as its all on the same meter, some say it has to be on the same ring circuit to work properly.

So yah. Any help would be appreciated because its my only real alternative to having fucking awful wireless.

I play on a wireless connection and my latency is fine. I rarely go above 50ms ping on the HH servers.

Yeah, mine used to be ok. Occasional spikes and an extra 30 ping or so, but atm my wireless connection looks like this:
and thats a relatively good result. When its really bad I can get almost 30% packet loss.

I think it has something to do with 6 other wireless devices all connecting to the same router. Idk whether there is a limit to how much shit the router can send/receive or whether there is just interference between adapters or something, but either way my wireless isn't suitable for any real-time applications and I don't see that changing.

Thx for that info K3D, I got similar results when I had a look but there is always somebody saying they need to be on the same ring so I just wondering if anybody here had any actual experience using them.

This might help. It scans all wireless channels so you can move to one that's more free. http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

Yeah, its something I've done in the past with success. Atm my wireless adapter is picking up 9 access points, with channels ranging from 1 all the way up to 14. There isn't much space, and there is a little overlap between channels so I don't really see any improvement no matter what I do.

Like, I think I've tried most everything. I've tried crafting an antenna out of a pringles can and even tried to craft a parabolic dish for my adapter (that actually ended up making it worse - lol)

About the only thing I haven't tried is fiddling with QoS, but the router doesn't have an interface for that and it means using telnet and using a bunch of complicated commands. Basically I think I'm more likely to make things worse doing that. (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1407792)

So yeah, 40 quid isn't money I throw around with exhuasting a lot of options first.

Just get them from a decent company (ie not overclockers) open them up very carefully and test them and if they dont work return under 7 day DSR.

That's worse case scenario and you will be down £3

Amazon are cheaper and I would be more confident getting a return under DSR in a timely fashion than overclockers.

Ebuyer I have also had no problems with returns. But never returned anything under DSR.

With both you will have to pay return postage if they do not work on your setup.
