I have bought a large and delapidated terrace house, and am wondering what's the latest and greatest way of networking it up?

The place needs a massive amount of work, so I can cable or install bits and pieces wherever is needed without wrecking the place.

In the past I have just used a wireless n router, and that has done the job well enough. However, is there a better way of networking the place that I am not aware of?

The signals coming in through a virgin cable router and the main items I need to hook up are as follows:
PC
XBox360 (with wireless adaptor)
Laptop
Mobile phones
Thanks!

If you are doing significant work to the place then cable will be much better than wireless, and you can get cable so cheap online now days that it's silly not to!

The normal order for gaming is:
Cable
Homepluga
String
Wishful thinking
Smoke signals
Wireless

And even then wireless is still a bit too high on the list.

Wireless has always been fine for me, I get a low ping (<50) on the HH servers.

For lists you need to put a
before each item :)

If you can cable, do.

I'd think about planning it all out though. Create a hub of sorts, then you can put cable runs through the house. If you're going to be knocking out bits of drywall anyway, you could always hide some of it in the walls. Depends how good at DIY you are, and how much you're up for.

Cant really endorse that. Our wireless routers in the living room, my rooms just over it. Now and then, I experience awful lag spikes (ingame) and slow connections (browsing etc), although my dad and my sister, who all have their PCs in different rooms, enjoy an almost perfect connection. Dunno, but I guess positioning is important, so be sure to keep that in mind

rudimentary cable setups are easy as pie, just drop some cables in the walls all leading to where the modem/router is. i would have an Ethernet socket in most rooms, as you would do with tv sockets. the pricey part is getting a sparky to lay it all in as he makes his way around with the wiring. obviously if your not re-wiring the place, then just chop out ducting for what you need. make sure you tell the sparky first as they can be ****s about pricing for extras.

I have a Belkin N1 Vision, pay for the 8mb broadband, get low ping too, the only thing I get is probably once a day I lose total connection, not too bad imo.

cabled would be the best way to go. Wireless can be fickle. I'd go with bomaster's suggestion - Ethernet in every room - even the loo.... :D

So cabling the house is the way to go? I had hoped that in this day and age there might be something slightly more sophisticated out there.

What about those plugs that you can use to pass signal through the electric cabling? I've never used them but it sounds cool!
