Got a bit of an odd problem and really struggling to find anything about it via google, so where better to ask than here?

The issue is to do with a laptop I just bought, it has on board graphics and also a nice Nvidia GeForce GT540M, it all runs fine but problems arise when I try to play games with the charger unplugged. It automatically switches to the onboard. There are options to launch games with the nvidia card, and also settings to make it only/always use the nvidia card, but no matter how I have these set up it will always use the onboard.

Needless to say this is somewhat of a bummer so any help, or a nudge in the right direction, would be massively appreciated.

I'm no expert in laptop affairs, but surely the answer is in the windows and nvidia power settings?

I have something similar in my laptop. Have you looked in power settings in control panel? There's options that affect graphics card performance depending on whether it's plugged in or unplugged.

k cheers guys, thought I had it with this:

but it didnt do the trick, really cant see any other options for it, both g-cards set to use max performance at all times, and also windows set to it in power plan, hmm maybe theres a reason this laptop was so cheap :/

I've been advised/suggested to uninstall the integrated gpu drivers but I'm not so sure about that, I like the idea of how it works...if it did lol

Check what display adapters you have in device manager, If you see 2 try disabling the onboard?

k tried that, there were 2 but it made the screen go blank then when i rebooted it was really low res, tried to open the nvidia control panal and it said that gpu wasn't attached to any monitor, but i defo disabled the intel onboard...man idkwtf is going on with it lol

no doubt it will be something painfully obvious, im suspecting some software is installed and over-riding everything. gonna get someone with some laptop knowledge to look at it i think.

Cheers :)
