Post Reformating help
My stationary is running really slow, to the point where it can't open a browser within 10 mins, so i'm thinking it's time for me to reformat it after 2½ years. Problem is I haven't reformatted a pc before and I'd appreciate some help.

First problem (aka dumb question), I don't have a windows cd since it was already installed and they didn't give me a cd. Will windows be installed when I reformat?

Second problem (maybe it should be the first problem), how do I reformat?

Third problem, I'm losing all my stuff. All those family photos.

Let's try and get to the bottom of what is causing your PC to run slowly before doing anything else.

The first thing I would do is check the health of your OS HDD.

Launch event viewer and check the system log for error relating to the HDD. ype 'eventvwr.msc' in the Start run/search box to launch event viewer.

Alternatively or additionally download and install CrystalDiskInfo and use it to check the health of your HDD's
http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html

If everything appears to be in order with your drives, then start up Resource Monitor and leave it running. Use your PC as normal and then when it goes slow, switch to it and check the CPU & Disk tabs for applications that are hogging your processor and HDD. Type 'resmon' in the Start run/search box to launch Resource Monitor

If that doesn't give you any clues, then try a Diagnostic startup. Type 'msconfig' in the Start run/search box to launch System Configuration, select 'Diagnostic startup' and click OK and then Restart. After the restart check the performance of various applications.

This approach shows only intensive CPU processes, I've had problems with low CPU usage and enormous HDD usage. You can download Process Monitor and run it if you have problems with high disk usage to see which process is querying the disk the most. You should isolate the process that is using your HDD the most. You could also have a malware installed on your HDD. After you've eliminated a failing HDD you could download and scan Malwarebytes' Antimalware software.

Defragmenting your HDD could also work if nothing of the above applies.

Process Monitor is good, but not really necessary, also it needs some configuration otherwise the amount of data it spews out is overwhelming. I forgot to mention the Disk tab of Resource Monitor which lists HDD activity per process. I've edited my reply above to include that.

Post Re: Reformating help
It began running slow while installing new windows update. It took over 2 hours to install 2 updates so I decided to shut it down and install from the desktop instead. Again it took too long to install the files. Thinking there was something wrong with the uodates I restored the system to the latest restoration point and this is the point I am at now.

I'm visiting my parents at the moments and I'll be back monday to tryout those methods.

PC is working again without problems. I can't say why it's working again, maybe it really was a bad windows update.
