Today I noticed the side gate that goes through to the back garden had been unbolted and left open. At first I was worried the tortoises might have escaped. Now we're wondering if someone has been casing our house looking for a way in round the back. We have 3 back doors and one of them is not built very well and someone could probably force their way in. I will probably be in the house if/when this happens.

At the moment I am thinking of setting up my laptop facing out with a webcam running motion sensor software that can upload images to dropbox or similar. Sadly a guard dog is not an option.

Well first I'd tell the police about your concerns and put up 'traps' so that you can tell for certain if someone has been sniffing around, dump sand outside and smooth it out so you can catch footprints, pitch up sticks against a closed gate so you can see if the gate is opened overnight general stuff that can only be disturbed by a person and only you would notice.

secondly I'd see about getting a new door, not cheep i know but if you feel it's a weakness then chances are someone else will too.

Thirdly, turn on a light make sure it's obvious to see from outside, landing or bathroom and then turn a radio on, not loud enough to keep you awake but loud enough so anyone listening outside can hear it. A great deal of break in's are done when no one is in the house or they think no one is in the house, if they they have any doubt that someone might be at home they won't chance it.

But yes first and foremost I'd tell the police about you're concerns. You might not be the only one in the area experiencing unusual activity.
