If anyone does need a PC I can reccomend these guys for price- take a while to deliver, but all quality bits in mine (BFG gfx cards, corasir ram, thermaltake psu, nice mobo etc) http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Interweb-Systems

Granted im having problems but it looks like Vista64 is the culprit there :)

I went for http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Q6600-QUAD-CORE-4GB-500GB-nVidia-Geforce-TWIN-8800GTX_W0QQitemZ200133957461QQihZ010QQcategoryZ179QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem - but im a sucker for gfx cards!

I had Vista64 and i had problems playing games. Very laggy etc

Now got Vista 32 bit version and not have any problems.

My Vista 64bit runs game just fine :) Just remember to keep all the drivers at their latest at all times, patches etc.

I'm running Team Fortress 2 on Very High settings with all the effects and with 16x/16x anisotropic filtering. (No pixels anywhere at all, yay!)

I use these console commands in my autoexec.cfg to force TF2 into the highest possible settings: (Higher than the options in-game allows you to chose)
Code:
mat_picmip           -1 // Very High textures
mat_parallaxmap       1 // Enable parallax mapping
r_threaded_particles    1 // Multicore particles
r_threaded_renderables  1 // Multicore rendering

Note that i have a Quad core CPU, so i have the two last for using my four cores - no use on a single or duo core computer which is most common :)

The only problem with 64bit I've encountered, is that i can't get Cisco VPN network working, which mean i can't communicate with my University. It's okay though, since i work over there on things anyhow.

I'm most interested in 64bit because it has some advantages over 32bit in programming, so i wanna see if i can figure out programming for 64bit. (You got ^2 the amount of memory available for all variables etc., funky stuff) Also I'm most likely gonna get 2gigs of RAM more, so I'm up on 4, which a 32bit system cannot run. (Maximum is 3)

The sad thing about 64bit, is that there's so few 64bit applications out there. No games so far. But if there someone makes a 64bit version of a game... It WILL perform better than the 32bit equivalent, because of the architecture. As it is now, a 64bit systems emulate 32bit and only gains minor advantages. Not the case with true 64bit applications, that's FULL THROTTLE ;)

Cool! Definately going to try this one out "mat_parallaxmap 1" Btw the "very high" textures in TF2 are now in the options menu as of a couple of updates ago.

nice, thanks for the quad core tweak (when i finally decide to use my baby for TF2)... But I have a def problem with vista64 on more demanding games- Ok things like bioshock run fine but crysis- even in 64bit mode- does not like Vista64, many many others agree with me (up to 30fps more from 32). yeah ill lose a gig of memory in effect but I want to see what my gfx cards can rly do! Something is holding the machine back, and unless its the DDR2 667 being too slow, its the O.S.
U can check out my system from the link. Oh and beware of some of the Nvidia 64-bit beta drivers- the current one is a crash-fest.

ofc 64-bit will be great when its standard- this is an example someone gave me from a while ago http://www.atari.com/shadowops/us/amd.html

But for what I wanted from my machine 64 just aint cutting it yet! Hell at least ive got a copy for when they sort things out! Also running gfx cards in SLI is a bit glitchy in 64... tho this might be down to Nvidia's need to release a new unfinished driver every couple of days! -For programming and proper stuff then I guess 64 could be great! I just want to know why people with half the machine i have are getting twice as many FPS in Crysis :( :( :( will fork out for vista32 at weekend so will tell u for sure then.

Try here: Crysis tweak guide

This is from page 13 of the guide:

"Something controversial about Crysis is that by default you can't enable the 'Very High' level for any of the in-game Advanced settings under Windows XP, nor in Vista DX9 mode, yet you can under Vista DX10 mode. Initially it was thought that this was due to Very High being DX10-exclusive. However this is not correct, it's an artificial limitation imposed by Crytek, and in fact it was during the Crysis Multiplayer Beta that it was discovered that you can indeed force Very High mode in DX9. Before we go any further however, it's important to understand that this is not a "DX10 hack", as under DX10 Crysis does indeed have some additional subtle effects which are exclusive and can't be reproduced in DX9 - see the DX9 vs. DX10 topic under the In-Game Settings section. For most intents and purposes though, Very High in XP (or Vista DX9 mode) will look almost identical to Very High in Vista DX10, and also performs better to boot."

Good luck! ;)

I posted this for you in another thread. Have you tried it yet? The site has loads of really great info on how to tweak your whole system not just Crysis tweaks. I really cannot recommend http://www.tweakguides.com/ enough. If the answer is not on there it is probably not anywhere. They have a forum too for more expert help.

Tried it and loving it! Thanks i pwn. Textures now have a much more realistic quality, even tho I already had textures set to "Very High". I have also added the multi-core commands even tho I only have dual core. It hasn't caused a problem so will leave them in. This is my "Launch Options" as now set under all of my Source games "Properties" tabs.

-heapsize 1024000 -novid -mat_parallaxmap 1 -r_threaded_particles 1 -r_threaded_renderables 1

All my Source games load fast and run smooth as silk under XP on my Athlon 64 3800+ (dual core), 2gb ram, GeForce 8500gt (512mb) @168x1050 all video option maxed out.

TweakGuides wrote:
-heapsize [Kilobytes]: This command tells the Source Engine to allocate more RAM to the system heap, where it can be accessed by the game to improve performance by caching more game information in RAM and hence reducing loading pauses. The default heapsize varies, but can be 256MB or less. If you have 2GB of RAM you may wish to increase this to 512MB (a heapsize of 524288). You can use higher values if you wish, but I don't recommend exceeding half your physical RAM (e.g. for 2GB RAM, don't set heapsize higher than 1024000). You can't force the game to load completely into RAM, that's not what this command does.

Only thing left now is to try and shoot straight heheh ;)

yeah tweakguides is great. but there is no getting round the fact I am losing frames on the same settings and with a better machine than some others. damn shame as Crysis is half the reason I went for the machine I did and didnt build a budget option as I usually do. Ive been scouring a Crysis forum, Crysis-sector, and many peope agree that the simple culprit is Vista64... dammit.
The game runs well enough in high settings at 1280x1024- but is just below playable for me... not even any real difference when i switch to very high or indeed medium- which also highlights the fact theres a prob... dammit again!
