I myself use Pidgin, which is an opensource Instant messenger program - handles almost all types of messaging, including MSN and IRC.

Here's how my IRC looks like: (Nice thing about it is that i don't have to open any programs - auto logins, joins etc., as MSN does when computer turns on)

i use pidgin too, much better than msn messenger and the like, open-source too
