Currently I'm paying Pipex for the alleged privilege of an 8Mb line. However my actual speeds are varying between 1.1 Mb and 5.7 (which isn't bad) - this however, is when my connection actually stays up for any kind of time (hence why I've dropped out of games quite frequently recently).
I am going to be ditching Pipex asap, steaming pile that they are, and am looking elsewhere. Any suggestions?
Im also looking around now since im getting 30 kb/s on a 2mb line nowadays god damn Aol and sadly O2 dont do my area
Edit: Here is whats happened after Aol supposadly upgraded
Befoer was almost spot on 2 mb and who the hell are Opal and why did it think i live in London and that i am on 50 miles from the maidne head server when I was 150 away last time :/ :
I assume you can't get cable? And frankly I'd ditch Aol anyway. They're a dying brand in this country as people realise they can get better packages elsewhere.
Try a Tiscali Unlimited package. Not the cheapest, but hardly the most expensive either, and you get a good deal considering. All you'll need is a BT line. And they had an offer to us if we switched to their phone service that they would give us the BT line rental for free. Probably a catch on that somewhere though.
Yeah, it's Tiscali - the company that bought Pipex and took it from being one of the best ISPs in the country to one of the absolute worst in one fell swoop.
But from what I can see if he can't get a cable provider like Be* or Virgin, and O2 doesnt service his area, and if he wants unlimited internet then the next best thing is Tiscali. Orange does do an unlimited package, but you need to switch your phone service to them, and it's 24 quid for 8 meg (even if you do get a "free" wireless router). The only other unlimited I've found thats decent is BT's Option 3. Tiscali's is still cheaper.
But if your not bothered about download limits then yes, theres better than Tiscali. But these days, unless your an extremely casual internet user, I doubt it would be much good to you.

Re: Broadband Speed Test. Post yours!
last 2 isp's i've had were tiscali and then pipex just before they got bought. Tiscali customer service is probably the worst of any company i've ever experienced and pipex's technical support comes a close second. Pipex locked me on 512kb for 6 months even though i was paying for 8meg and the line carries 6 meg perfectly stable.
edit, Just received and email from pipex. price increase as of may 2nd too!

Re: Broadband Speed Test. Post yours!
Its seems my service provider (Orange) has changed hosts over the last few days.
Ironically the distance seems not to have changed much, if anything i'm now closer to the server.
As a result my ping has gone from around 10 to 40 off-peak and 30 to 60 peak for playing HL2 games.
It should be noted that it doenst seem to lag any more than it did b4, and the download and upload rates are pretty much the same.
Just goes to show, that your ping depends alot on where and how your ISP host their servers.
