yeah my fav so far also
Frog, i listened to all of area 1, not one tune doesnt have a poppy kick (that i noticed), maybe i should say clicky instead, poppy isnt too accurate. you shouldnt be so randomly defensive, i wasnt being randomly offensive, obviously its something too discuss on another (music) forum...but why so defensive against something you know is true? its not a dis! just a queery...bit like saying why does dnb always use a punchy snare...bit silly but you know, opinions and all that
or..if not id be happy if you can point me in a direction where the 303s roll and the 909s dont
additional pointless information; i was introduced to trance through mzone and mark eg exclusively for about a year, their stuff was more of a cross between happy hardcore/techno and trance than just being trance, often with a heavy distorted happy hardcore style kick but trance sounds on top, just got accustom to that i guess which is why it all relatively sounds so high pitched, to me.

bfox, I took what you said as what you meant. You didn't refer to anything in particular. You used the word 'always', which implies to everything. i.e. the whole 30+ hours.
It's not about me being defensive, but, for me at least, it was all about your articulation and the ambiguity of whatever it was you were trying to say.
That was all initially.
Personally, I'm not interested in discussing what you think a particular type of minimal progressive music should or should not be. If you want to seriously have any sort of productive discussion about it, then I can provide you with email addresses of artists that produce this style of music and you can question them.

Re: 30+hrs of recorded mixes & live sets from February party.
Had a listen to area 1 as well bfox, and I don't hear the kick as being overly "clicky". Sure there is a click to it but this helps the tracks get that "punchy" sound.
On a bit of a tangent, but when you record the kick drum on a real drum kit, your mic placement and eq settings are often set so that the sound of the beater striking the kick drum skin is heard alongside the powerful low frequencies of the drum itself. Again giving it a defined "punchy" sound.
For me the kick drum sound on those tracks sounds good. The compression used when encoding means this stream will never sound as good as the original .wav file but it still sounds good.
Maybe your headphones, speakers, eq settings?

no no its not my speakers or anything like that, im very familiar with the different sounds and styles of kicks and how to make them... my own production is terrible, but i understand it
interesting point about recording real kicks, i believe a similar idea is used with nearly all (quality) dance music, with at least 2 kicks being layered, and then several very slight variants of that doubled up kick to give it a more rolling, flowing feel. Typically a deep kick layered with a punchy one, i guess having a very similar effect that recording a real kick has. its been ...holy shit a decade...since i last mic'd a drum kit up but if i remember rightly isnt the ideal set up to have 1 lowly eq'd mic inside the drum and then another more direct mic pointing towards the front of the drum? idk.
one thing i have to admit is trance almost always has a hi-hat or some symbol on the on beat making the kick sound higher and more clicky than it probly is alone. hey im not saying its bad, i just prefere unconventional, i like nin lol.

Just been relistening to some of this stuff, any chance of some of the sets from the op being reuploaded.
I have a 12 hour Soundcloud account that gets used for the latest resident DJ sets. The contents of that account gets updated after each party. The old mixes get moved over to http://www.tribeoffrog.com/mixes and are available for streaming/downloading from there. That's why some of the sets are now shown as being unavailable in the OP. If you visit the link I mentioned then you can find them by looking out for the ones that include 'Recorded at ToF February 2011' in the title.
