Re: Guns, Girls & Games:Sexual harassment in world of videogames
Rape has two main meanings, both of which are applicable in the circumstances that they are being used as a replacement for the likes of pwned etc (the wanton destruction or spoiling of a place, spoil or destroy (a place): timber men doubt the government’s ability to ensure the forests are not raped).
The second of which somehow seems to have been left out of this conversation totally...
The other applicable meaning of the word that has been used here in a very negative sense to highlight some horrible hate acts committed by people online. Is the older origin of the word. And still a legitimate usage of the word.
Even in a WW2 documentary of decent standard, I watched the other night, featured the usage of the word to describe a crippling barrage from one warship to the other.
So in summation I would say that any War/combat game or equivalent has a legitimate claim of usage of the term in a non-sexual sense unless otherwise stated in context.
And yes I think the treatment of women online is often horrible. But likewise the treatment of other males is also often horrible. I don't condone any of it...
...What I also don't condone is censorship, on the other hand.
...But she never even said anything about planning on talking about the subcultures, just the tropes and as I said before, a reason (And most likely a BIG reason for it) that she gets trolled a lot is because someone spammed her kickstarter page to ask for support on 4chan. But it probably would have happened to some degree anyway of course, but not of this scale I think.

On the note of feminist frequency, and sexism. There is no reason to discuss why or how sexism is in video games as it is simply the symptom of the disease. There is no point in trying to understand the small picture when the bigger picture tells the story outright.
There is no point in focusing attention towards gaming culture and how it objectifies women, when we should be focusing on society. Where do you think they got the idea that women are objects? And it goes both ways, men are made into objects as well in video games. That doesn't matter because it's only sexist when men object women. Cure the disease and not the symptom of sexism in video games. Society is at fault and this discussion is running wide and out off course for the real, actual, point.
Shifting blame to the internet and gaming simply demonstrates how terrible our society is managing gender roles. The internet is simply a catalyst in which sexism is amplified. We should not be forced into a position in which we 'protect' women, they can fend for themselves. We are a community consisting of men, what signal are we not sending out? That women are weak and that they need men to protect them. Bullshit.
