Could lead to a new breed of manufacturers aiming specifically at the enthusiast market. Unlikely in the short term, but possible.
The writing has been on the wall for desktops for a while now, particularly in businesses where the trend is to move to 'The Cloud' and rely on a browser for pretty much everything. It won't truly happen for another few years yet as more complex applications still require client side installation, but I suspect it'll come.
Or, I could be talking shite, which wouldn't be unusual

First thought was "greedy move", second was "but they're Intel, so maybe ... ". I think it's a tad early to proclaim the desktop dead because Intel makes a doubtful move. PC gamers have been going woe is us for a looong time.
The economic benefit for Intel (and Intel alone) in fusing processors to mainboards is undeniable. My opinion is that this is mainly greed, but I admit to a nagging, doubting thought: They have to be aware that AMD is lurking and that they are handing them the keys to a whole target group. Consequently, if we assume that intel does not query the magic 8-ball for business decisions, this means they have sales numbers at their disposal that make this bit of the market neglectable. That is slightly worrisome.
Let's have an optimistic view on this. Kiss is right, at least the CPU market is gonna get more interesting. Been using AMD for about a decade now, let's see what they make of this. Might be a time to look at AMD stocks ...
