Dont mean to side track the thread, but what exactly is 'awesiome' about portal?
I find myself in a minority of people who think its meh.
I have never gotten a concerete reason for its achievements.
For me it was a samey puzzle shooter. Felt like what HL 2 would have been if it only had the gravy gun. I didnt notice anything particularily funny about it, besides the 'meme'-dom potential.
Playing around with the portals felt cool for like 2 seconds and the climax was finding abandoned survelance offices.
The 'innovative' gameplay really came from an earlier game (Narbacular Drop) developed by the same company in 2005 so its hardly new
Mostly because portal takes what narbacular drop had (which was good to start), adds source and its accompanying physics to smooth it out (dunno about you but i played narbacular drop and thought the physics left a lot to be desired but the concept was good). I found the puzzles difficult enough the first time through, but the point about hand holding was fair enough, there isnt AS much "get from a to b using everything you've learned and no new mechanics" as there could have been.
It then added black humour which i though was good, maybe bathos humour isnt your thing wisty, maybe your just too happy a person . While not lol worthy some of the time it added a theme to it and an antagonist that you end up getting to know over the two or so hours the game lasts, a character I found a lot more rounded than the main character in some 15 hour long EA "Epics."
So your right, it's not a long game, it does have it's flaws but it does something newish (even if ND did do it before it didnt do it as fluidly as portal), it's not particularly long, and if you ignored the price tag and thought of it as a £40 game then its length is something of a deal breaker.
But its not £40 It was £30 With Tf2 And HL2:Ep2 And now its free
The humour was awesome, and the gameplay is very fun. I know that it comes from Narbacular Drop. Heck I played that game before Portal was even announced. But Narbacular Drop was just a college project. It's very nice to see it remade in such a professional way.
But if the humour does not amuse you, I can understand. Without the humour, it's just a fancy version of Narbacular Drop. Hardly amusing at all then I guess.
However, the humour hit me like a dump truck. I laughed, and I still laugh of it. It will continue to be one of the best experiences in gaming I had.
I also very much like the story, both in the game, and outside the game in the form of the Aparture Science website and all the fuzz about the Portal 2 announcement.
Aparture Science is just amazing to me, and so is Cave Johnson. It ties directly into the Half-life world, and therefore I really love looking for clues on where I can connect the two. I also speculate, as many others, where Chell came from. My theory is that she is one of the daughters from the bring your daughter to work day, which as far as I know was also the day GlaDOS killed the employees with her nerve gas. So behind all the humour, we have an insane and immortal business leader, Cave Johnson, his artificial and insane daughter GlaDOS, Cell as the daughter of now dead parents, and most likely many other daughters either killed in the tests, or waiting in stasis. And of course mass graves somewhere, as GlaDOS obviously cleaned up after her massacre.
That she is so happy about it all makes it epic to me.
Also she sings.
AI's that sing will KILL you. HAL did it, and GlaDOS did it. SPOILERS
Im sorry people keep blaring 'humour humour humour' but i played the game 3 times and never found an inch of lols in it. I regard black humour as the most exalted art of commedy but i found none. Can some give an example?
Unless one means the disjuct pieces of monolgue drones by Glados ? coz they just not funny. Well not funny when compared to Frankei Boyle, George Carlin or Bill Hicks.
Well done, android. We would like to remind you that android hell is a real place and you will be sent there at the first sign of defiance.

We were going to have a huge party for you and we were going to invite all your friends, but your best friend, the companion cube, couldn't come, because you murdered him. None of your other friends could come, either, because you don't have any other friends because you're unlike-able. It says so right here in your file: Unlike-able - liked by no one.

In horror I find myself agreeing with wistfane. The only thing that I thought was "fun" about the game was shooting through portals at cannonball-speed and the escape with glados heckling you.
Maybe I'm spoiled because I played a shockingly similar puzzle game when I was younger. Just never seemed like an original game to me, even though humour-wise it is.
