Re: Buy a PS3 or a 360 (facts only!)?
Falcon was the first die shrink on the CPU only Jasper included a GPU die shrink from 90nm to 65nm drastically reducing power requirements and therefore heat output. Valhalla is on the way with the possibility of a new reduced size case.
Doing XClamp removal and overheating is only ever a temporary measure to fix a broken xbox (100% fix requires a reballing of the chips). The cracked BGA solder does not fully repair and further heat cycles will warp the board and recrack the joints. Earlier models generate far too much heat and the cooling solution is poorly implemented. (cooling system relies on pulling air through the console, but the ducting is very poor with many air gaps to reduce the suction over the heatsinks.)
I have a xenon (first release xbox) however I have replaced the fans and air sealed the duct venting.
Falcons are prone to failure also as the GPU is the most likely part of the xbox to fail.
It was the NXE update which started killing off the Falcons as the new dashboard required a bit more out of the GFX causing it to overheat easier. (E94 error I believe)
I'm on my 4th 360 and have yet to have the RROD (First one was the original model where the disc drive went, the replacement was the next model which is still going strong and currently with my brother. I replaced that with one the first Elite releases which got the E94 error and I've not had an issue with its replacement from MS.) The best thing about them is that despite the fact they're a bit fragile, MS will usually have your replacement out to you within a week.
Currently, 750 xbox games out (according to wiki). 116 of them are currently xbox exclusive games, 75 are console exclusive (so only the 360 and the pc have them) and 559 multiplatform. So that's 15.5% exclusive games and 10% console exclusives and 74.5% multiplatform games.
Currently, there are 607 PS3 games out (according to wiki). 116 of them are also PS3 exclusive, 8 are console exclusives and 482 are multiplatform. So that's 19.1% exclusive, 1.3% console exclusive and 79.4% multiplatform games
So the PS3 launches pretty much a year after the 360 and has a higher percentage of exclusive games with the 360 having a higher number of games that are also available for the PC but the ps3 having more games that are unexclusive.
Halo 3 is the most overhyped generic POS shooter ever made since well, Halo 2. Gears of war is a hell of a lot of fun though. Only game I ever considered buying a 360 for was Dead Rising but the second is coming out multiplatform. Oh yeah, Alan Wake is also supposed to be amazing.
So yeah, PS3 has MGS4, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, inFamous, LPB, Ratchet and Clank, Twisted Metal, Socom 4.
So tl;dr consoles suck, stick to PC. RDR is gonna come out in about a year I imagine. Though if I had to buy one myself I think that in my completely biased opinion PS3 wins. (I've played both consoles round friends houses for long periods of time and I did enjoy the 360 but I preferred the PS3.)
