This works for single player only as of now, and is of course an incomplete feature, so don’t even think about bugs or balance! This is purely for fun and curiosity!
There are scraps of Versus mode inside the demo. Models, sounds, and yes, even helpful tool-tips and hint screens are included for playing the Infected bosses! If this post is somehow against the rules, delete it at your leisure.
1. From the starting screen, click Options, then Mouse/Keyboard, and enable the developer console. 2. Start a single player game and open your console with the ~ key.
3. Type “sv_cheats 1″ and press enter. This will enable cheat mode.
4. Type “ent_fire !self setteam 3″ and press enter. When you close the console, you will “die†and join the Infected team!
You get to choose where to spawn as a baddie! Press E to cycle through some suggested spawn locations, or to teleport directly to the survivors if you get too far away before spawning. But the next problem is that the AI controlled survivors will not leave their starting room and the game will not start on its own.
5. Open the console and type “director_force_versus_start 1″ and enter to begin the round.
The survivors will start hacking their way through the apartment building and you finally get to try your zombie character!
6. When you die (and you probably will), you will not respawn. Press space to cycle through different spectating modes till you are in in free flight mode. You must then use these commands in the console WHILE DEAD. z_spawn tank z_spawn boomer z_spawn smoker z_spawn hunter These will spawn you as that infected at the spot you are currently “flying†while dead.
KEEP IN MIND that these are just scraps of Versus mode! These demo maps were not designed for it, and they are not balanced or bug free in any way! There are places where you will die as soon as you spawn among other fun ways to get stuck or “break†the level.
Next: Custom Maps reported by TIHan on the Steam Forums
The Director - You will not be wading through hordes of infected from start to finish. What Valve has implemented is an AI Director that places the infected on the map in real time using no flags or checkpoints at all. It is intelligent enough to place them on it’s own, needing only a map to be able to work with. de_dust.bsp was not modified.
This was merely a test to see how the AI Director works on randomly spawning zombies. Yes, there are a few errors and textures missing in de_dust even though I have extracted all the Counter-Strike: Source files into Left4Dead. Perhaps those missing textures and models are in other GCF files that I haven’t extracted out of. (Again, this was a test.) Pretty much any map will work with Left4Dead. All you need is the textures, models, scripts, and sounds for the map as well as the nav mesh(l4d will tell you the map is unplayable, however, it still works as you can see). More testing needs to be done if someone ever wants to fully incorporate any cs:s, hl2, dod:s, tf2 maps into left4dead. Some of it would require entity manipulation within the .bsp.
de_dust in Left 4 Dead Demo Tutorial Left 4 Dead Demo is located in your \Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\ folder. If you look in just your \steamapps\ folder you will see GCF files. These GCF files contain all game content for steam, except for the l4d demo. First, what you want to do is make a backup copy of the Left 4 Dead Demo folder that is in the \Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\ folder. Next, download GCF Scape. http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/fil…cfscape131.exe Install it. Once installed, run it. When the GCF Scape is open, click File then click Open. Browse to where the GCF files are located, \steamapps\. Choose “counter-strike source shared.gcfâ€. You will now see a “root†folder expanded into “cstrike†and “reslistsâ€. Expand “cstrikeâ€. You will notice a ton of files. Select all the files and folders that are in “cstrikeâ€. Make sure you have already backed up your Left 4 Dead Demo folder. Extract them to \steamapps\common\left 4 dead demo\left4dead\. Boot up Left 4 Dead. Make sure you have enabled developer console in options. Press “`†and type “map de_dustâ€. Viola, there you go. Hope this helps.

Re: L4D PLAY AS A ZOMBLE IN DEMO ?
If you give enough monkeys a computer installed with the L4D demo eventually one will type in the right stuff to enable play a zombie!
They will of course turn on their human masters believing them to be the zombie hordes but thats beside the point.....

It works in both single and multiplayer, so you can fight against friends, but let me stress again, in a broken and unbalanced way - you can in no way get a feel for the real thing with this. Is this message clear enough? It’s nothing like proper Versus.
I'd rather just wait for the proper, (hopefully) balanced Versus gameplay come full release.

Re: L4D PLAY AS A ZOMBLE IN DEMO ?
Yeah, balanced sounds more fun. I don't like the sound of player-controlled "boss" zombies being as squishy as their AI-controlled ones, especially if they're so severely limited with cooldowns etc.
It needs to be challenging, yet fun for both teams - I'm not sure how they'll balance it, but I'm sure they'll be able to. I quite like playing vs AI zombies anyway.
Maybe if zombie players can call in extra hordes of zombies to help them it'll make things better?
You can kill a Boomer with a couple of pistol shots/single mid-range (well out of vomit range) shotgun. Hunters only take a few rounds from the pistol while well out of range... or a shotgun to the face. Smokers only have surprise on their side (unless teamed with a handy boomer to conceal when they explode - interesting tactic that one) Tanks sound interesting... random player can spawn as one, but has to get close to survivors otherwise they'll lose control of it. And you can't play as a witch - kinda pointless that -although it might be nice if a waiting-to-respawn zombie player got the chance to switch to a disturbed witch and control her for a bit until she gets killed.
Kinda like the idea of hunters being invisible when stood still (unless looked directly at by a survivor?)
I think there are some variations in AI zombie boss health. It's taken me 3 direct shotty hits to take down a hunter once or twice and the rest of the time just one.
Boomers do seem slightly useless though unless you can suprise survivors. Which is hard when you move at the speed of a disabled elephant constantly going "MMM BLUP".

Would be cool if boomers could vomit on the floor to attract a mob of zombies at will, without it being directly onto a survivor.
