Join the server that runs the game mode that you want to play.
Hopefully this might make things easier.
(Note to admins: It is still possible to load, for example a co-op map on a versus locked server, but the result will be that it won't work correctly. So please be sure to only load the maps that are related to the game mode of the server that you are on.)
