seriously it costs millions to develop games do people not know that? :?

Do you suppose Valve did not, when they said they intend to update L4D?

People losing trust in them ends up costing money as well, and an equal amount of cash won't be able to buy that back.

A major tf2 patch usually comes with a 50% off for Tf2 and a free week, I'm pretty sure someone can dig up the post where valve said that during the scout patch tf2 players increased by something around 30%. (I might be wrong, but it was a lot).

Here is one such statistic.

"Time to look at the sales of Team Fortress 2 to see the impact of the updates on revenue. Holy s#!%. The sales spike by huge amounts everytime there's a sale or major update. Steam sales went up 106% after a free update. Player minutes went up by 105%. Gifting has thrown a 71% sales increase. Surprisingly, sales from retail stores also went up by 28%. Finally, it saw 75% increase in new users. Knock knock. Who's there? Steam. Steam who? Steam is so successful it hurts."

They don't need to update their games, but they've still done it.

Do you seriously think that regular updates instead of annually milked franchises have nothing to do with Valve's success and reputation?

Precisely. Valve is successful because I, and many others, would happily buy a 7/10 game made by them in the knowledge that in a years time it will be a 9/10 game. Like I said, I'm not at all mad with Valve for announcing a sequel, in fact I think they supported L4D a lot better than a great deal many other developers would have, but I'm not sure I would have bought it had I known L4D2 was on the horizon.

Call it spoiled, call it high expectations, call it whatever.

How lovely. Frying Pans are my second favourite type of weapon in the whole wide world, only slightly behind thrown archaeology hammers.

I am officially buying Left 4 Dead 2 now.

They have updated it, quite a lot and even released free DLC on 360 (and ps3?) which is practically unheard of. The new game looks great to me more appealing than the 1st i think its quite an overhall, more than just a map-pack some new skins and its daytime, there has to be a limit.

*cough
*

that makes me sad :(

They added a single new map and survival mode, otherwise it's just bugfixes. Not a whole lot, even if you don't take TF2 into account. But if you do, compare 100$ for L4D2+1 to 20$ for TF2+updates.

Free DLC might be unheard of on consoles, but similarly paid-for map packs or alternate character skins are nonexistent on PC. Which is, by the way, another potential concern: Valve shifting towards a console audience.

I'm not seeing the great big awesomeness that L4D2 brings, not at this point in time, anyway. Quite the opposite, the gameplay looks practically identical. Maybe they have something up their sleeve, there's still a bunch of unannounced gameplay modes and whatnot.
