i loved arena mode too, definitely worked very well. Not sure about allowing ringers to increase the team sizes, as it opens the whole format up to scrutiny. I'd suggest keeping the teams the same size (say 4), but having a pool of say 5 or 6 players that can play (i.e. a squad). This way, it give each captain some leeway with organising dates, and give the captain the additional duty of picking their teams in a fair way to give everyone a game.
I wouldn't be sure about how to manage changes of team members mid game though (i.e. if you're playing best of 11, you're 6-4 down so you make a substitution). That could have all sorts of repercussions on game timings and flow.
the basic format of HH cup worked really well though, I'd be reluctant to make any dramatic changes.
I don't really like the idea of picking players for each game. That would mean the captain would have to tell someone that he wont play tonight. Why fix something that isn't broken?

I'd be happy to play in the same team tbh, not sure if the feeling is mutual lol
to me keeping the same teams and maybe adding one player is a cool idea, i think 5 is better than 4 personally, plus this will generate some grudge matches
ofc next time there wont be all the same people but the general structure for team selection is pretty good if not a tad illogical (like england vs yorkshire lol) . also i think it would be better if everyone played on the same map...ie say ravine for 1st round, granary for second round etc, but maybe i just think that cause i got ravine on our last game and thats by far my worst arena map.
my only gripe (?) about the whole thing was all the forums, there were a hellavalot of HH cup forums all mixed up it was really quite difficult to just find out when the next game was, or find out 1 thing because of so many similarly titled threads regarding the cup, so it would be cool next time if it could have its own section with '1' stickied thread which clearly states the next games which gets updated as aposed to new ones for each stage or however it was done, I know there was a lot of infomation that needed to be posted but it became a bit of a chore to go through, and was rather confusing for me at least
Unfortunately, bfox, as i mentioned in a previous post, I was declined at the start of the tournament to get a seperate part of the forums. I admit there was a lot of posts for the HH cup, but they were all necessary at the time of posting. They may have been left stickied for too long but sure no harm.
Personally i didnt think it was hard at all to find threads. The [HH Nations Cup] thing defined the cup topics from other topics, everything that was important was stickied and the topic title said it all. I had a argument with a few people in vent who said the forums were too confusing in general. It was brought up that the forums were too cluttered. If another sub forum was added would that have made any difference?
The other issue that you brought up before was of course the maps. It seemed to work nicely that people chose their own map in the group stages. In the quarter finals people were sick of playing the same map over and over again, so I took it to a random selection. I was going to choose out of all the arena maps on the server but I was advised against it. But it will be a matter for discussion.

cheeky bugger
it more or less boils down to which of us is playing, little is alot better than me.
i think this team captain idea is great though, maybe make the nations cup a yearly thing, although i doubt we'll be able to get the full roster of nations back in their original teams in a years time. i think team surrey was disbanded quite some time ago
cool ye sorry dont want to sound like i was moaning about it Craki, i mentioned it here more as a way of voicing opinion to the forums as aposed to you dude
and it was no big thing, i imagine no one knew the cup would be as big as it was at the time, it is ofc easy to critisize with the benefit of hyndsight. but yah i think its own sub-forum would make it easier for both you and participants, and be good advertisment for the HH for any randoms visiting the forum ('ooh this community has cups i wanna join' type thing, erm ignoring the current front page lol)
as for the maps well its always equal for both teams unless one team really practices at a perticular map, gets some solid stratagies worked out then goes 'how about we play here' the other team agrees with no real map specific prep...but thats a bit far fetched to say the least, a good team should have that for all maps anyway, so i guess it doesn't really matter too much how its done, i kinda like the idea of knowing which maps quite far in advanced but its a personal preference.
Nah dont worry im just being my usual objective self.
I do agree a sub forum is definately the best thing for the next tournament, as you say it does look good for the community. Frog mentioned he may try to find a tournament thing to integrate into the forums for the next tournament, which would be very cool.
See the thing about the maps, all maps can be played well with a bit of preperation by the team. It all depends on how hard the team want to win and of course how much the people in that team play matches. The likes of wales and finland both contain league players, so they will know one or two things of what should and shouldnt be done. I cant say those things will be right but it is a start. So it all depends on the team.
Ok sorry to bring this topic back from the grave but im bored as hell in work (i have literally nothing to do!!) and cant think of any thing else to do but this.
As i have said i will run a tournament soon, but im just looking back over what was said about the tournament suggestions and having a think of what should be the format of the next one.
I had a bit of an idea for the next one though that i want to run by anyone thats interested. I dont know what the demand will be like for either a nations cup format again or just a pick your own team format. I have however thought of something that may be a possible solution to the pick your own team format.
Obviously people will form teams with the people they like, play well with or otherwise. And as people have said this will form super teams. My thoughts to this is that say we get 4 teams or 5. I can have a look to see the total hlstat points per team. Then get the average hlstat points in all the teams.
So to explain this better so 3 teams, team one has 1k points, 2 has 2k and 3 has 3k. Obviously the average hlstat points is then 2k (<<< fckin genious)
Now what the plan is, if a team has over average hlstat points, then that team falls into the category of a good team. This good team is then banned from having two of their team playing their best class.
So again to explain this. The scenario above we have team 3 with over average hlstat points. They go to field their team for the 4v4 match. 2 of the people on their team are banned from playing their best/most played class for that game. So say my best class is sniper and im on the team. If the team choose to sacrifice me, then i am banned from being sniper for that game and must play a different class.
And then we can take the average teams, say team 2, are on the average. So when they go to play their games, 1 of their team is banned from playing their best class.
I dunno maybe people think its too complicated (im really feckin bored) or it is too hard on the teams that are above skill. But i think if people can understand it and it can be implemented easily, it would allow people to choose the team they want to be in without creating super strong teams that will destroy everyone. This system would then be scrapped when the qualifiers are over to allow for utter destruction. Thoughts please???
