Well, in 1v1 score isn't really an issue because its pretty clear who wins. If players numbers are small enough perhaps it would be better to do a knockout 1v1 tournament instead of teams?

The other way you could do it is to keep subdividing the winning team. So you start with 6v6, then 3v3, then you bump the highest scoring player up from the team to make it 2v2 etc. As J-man says there is a lot more to the game than scoring points, you don't get many points for watching a crucial chokepoint and you'll get more points for playing suicidally.

The same problem exists with the Highlander format. A heavy class that gets a lot of love from his medic will score much higher than a equally skilled heavy class that does not, for example, and one Sniper might trump another on a map more favourable to Snipers. Ofc, Highlander would be fun regardless, but its all about team work!

Oh, and I think disallowing league players is a bad idea. I play in leagues too, I just happen not to be part of the HH team, so is everybody who plays league games to be disallowed, or just the HH guys? If just the HH guys then why? Either way "Lets find the best Scout. Apart from him, he is too good" sounds pretty stupid to me.

Hmm, kerotan, or inside joke, whichever you wanna be. Its an interesting idea. I cant think of a foolproof way of deciding who is the best players out of the teams. Then again there probably isnt a fool proof system. I will wait jman to come back and see if he has any ideas towards it.

The league player thing was just an idea brought forward which is going to be ruled out. No point running a best of class if the good ones are not allowed join. Officially if we got the league players to join and play, they should top the tables for each part. So it will be interesting to see where the league players stand :P.

This is such a difficult thing to come up with I really don't know how you will do it...

If, and its a big if, you had the confirmed players, several teams (6+) setup to play highlander, where you had to play the same class and your points were averaged would give you the highest scoring for each class.

But tbh, no idea if it would work, whether you have the number of players or whether people would really want to do it....

For some matchups, everyone playing the same class could work. I don't see scouts, sollies or demos being too bad, snipers could work out too.

Pyros might be somewhat boring as has been already said.
I can well see heavies just piling up in team matches and going for the cap in one group. Very little action highly possible. 1v1 is very, very bland, the only thing to take into consideration is to ambush and roll your minigun up before he does the same to you.
Engineers... Well, nothing there to say.
Medics could be rather extraordinary, this could actually turn out fun. But not what being a medic usually is about.
Spies, wohoo, who's the best shot with the ambassador... I can't see this turning out too well.

So only one class playable at a time isn't really that much of a test at who's best at the class, only a small aspect of the game is usually taken into consideration.

That's why I think Highlander might have a tad more truth in it. Yeah, it's still about single matches and not about your whole skill but so is a football match.

Also some things may alter how well you do that are outside of your control (a good heavy without any medic support does is less effective than one with it, or an engy gets far less to do than the opposing team's engy if his team is steamrolling the other etc.)

In other words, this isn't necessarily very accurate, cups sometimes aren't (not the Nations cup, mind you! :D), but therefore it shouldn't be taken as the Final Truth.
Still, I can see this working out well, so good luck! Think I'm gonna sign up myself as a heavy/demo, actually...

well, if i had to make a BoC tournanment i would do it more like a Best of Teams and then find the best of classes. Let me explain my ideia:

It would be like a football league. We form as many team with the 9 classes as possible. I think we can make about 5 team at least. 5 pyros, 5 demos, 5 spies, etc. Every team will have a name and their strategies. Now the competition would really be like a football league. There will be matches like TEAM A vs TEAM B and the winner woud receive a certain amount of points. In this league the kind of match can change after every Team has completed all matches against each other. Like, in the first round is CP, 2nd is Arena matches....

In the end there'll be a winning team. We can find when the season end who was the best of their classes! The pyro/demo/spy with more points wins. BUT to avoid things like "i'm a team player" or " my team tatics made me a defensive player" then the classes of the winning team receive some extra points.

an example: After X.Y,Z,A and B teams played all CP and Arena matches we considered the season over. X ended 1st, A 2nd, B 3rd, Y 4th and Z 5th. All member of the winning team receive 12 points, the 2nd 8, 3rd 6, 4th 4 and 5th 2. Imagine now that the sniper of X team has the best score in the end of the season. he's the best of his class. But a X's pyro played more as a team using compression blast to protect the team and spend a lot of time spy checking... he's 3rd in his class. He receives those 12 points extra to make things fair! after all it's team work.

my idea can have a 3rd part but this one is not essencial: After the points earned by personal scores in all matches, after receiving the prize points of their ending positions of the league, there should be a poll for: who's the best heavy in the league? or the best soldier?. the results of that poll will give more points to the player with more votes. This time only the winner receives points. About 10pts for example. We finally do a final number of point: a spy had 172 points in all league, his team ended 2nd and he was voted the best spy of the tournament. he will have 172+8+12=192! Comparing to the other spies we'll know if he is or not the Best of his Class.

i not saying " hey, look at my way to do thing". I just you can't have some ideas from my idea 'cause i don't wanto to create a tournament, it's a lot of responsability and hard work :( . This kind of tournament will definitly not please at least the 75% you said Crak.

Just some ideas:

Some classes can be duelled; soldier, sniper, scout and demo. Other classes require a class specific setup (example see etfl rules for class tournaments http://etf2l.org/about/rules/#26).

Highlander is fun, but very hard to organise. More people=more hassle. Imagine how hard it was to do a 4v4 arena tournament (plenty of ringers where required) and multiply with 5 (the additional numer of players per team).

I've gotta be honest, this sounds horribly convoluted.

Class specific comps normally take the form of 1 on 1 duels in a straight knockout, pyramid tourney.

Why not set up a poll to see which class/es would be the most popular and start from there?

Well first I would like to re-iterate my point that my part of the tournament is a bit more light hearted then extra's. Second I had the same concerns as most of you with regards to extra's part due to play numbers. But he is under the impression that he can pull it off no problem, so i will not argue.

A monkey, where this is a good idea, it isnt in the slightest feasibilty. You are talking about having 5 teams of 9 players, organising 45 players to play at specific times is near to impossible. I found it hard with around 48 players in 12 teams. 45 players in 5 teams isnt a valid option. Well i dont think and im sure many would agree. And with regards to the 75%. Fact is if they dont like it, they dont have to play, its not as if im forcing people to play and neither is extra. We are throwing an idea out and seeing the response, im sure if me and extra feel that it is not worth running from the feedback. Then it wont be run. I have a good track record so far with the tournament I ran. I will run a similiar tournament again in the future if necessary and leave this idea to the side.

Also I would like to point out to everyone that me and extra are only dealing with certain play here. Obviously there are a number of things that make a good player, but to cover all aspects you would need to be looking at maybe 5-6 different formats. Some that would not really be playable in a tournament format.

I'm with Jesus on this one, both methods are far too overcomplicated. The best to find out who's the best is with a 1v1 ladder.
