Yes, the taunt crits idea was formed quite sometime before the high-five was introduced into TF2. The original idea was based on a trade-off whereby putting yourself into a momentarily uncontrollable and vulnerable position, a short burst of guaranteed crits is awarded. The high-five, which isn't really a taunt, breaks this by there not being the trade-off of vulnerability. It also brings about unnecessary insults when other players activate the high-five by responding to players that prolong the high-five stance.
